Default 92 Accord LX transmission up shift problem

My 92 Accord LX will not shift from 3rd to 4th when you floor it. The engine reaches 5100 rpm and then the engine cuts up, pops, sounds like it's going to explode, but it won't shift up to 4th. If I don't floor it, the shifts are OK. There are no diagnostic codes. Is the engine not reaching high enough RPM's to shift, or is there something wrong with the shift solenoids?

Check the shift cable tension. It runs from the throttle body down to the transmission. With the throttle body closed, the cable should have no play and it should move the lever on the trans as soon as the throttle is moved. If its out of adjustment, I would adjust the tension and see what happens.

Thanks for responding. I have already adusted the accelerator cable and the cable that continues from the throttle to the transmission per the Chilton manual. There was a note in the manual that stated I could change the adustment of the transmission cable by 1/8 inch to adjust for driving habits. I test drove it and made several adjustments which made a difference in shifting, but the engine still craps out at 5100 rpm. My 93 Accord doesn't shift until 6000 rpm. I also took the console out and adjusted the transmission shift cable per the Chilton manual.
