help me with the confusion, i dont know hondas
i tried searching but couldnt find much.
i just bought a beater 88 crx "si" for $600, and i am trying to find out about it.
it has a sunroof, but rear drums? i have heard that si's all have sunroofs, and 4 wheel disc?
also the engine backfires and stutters horribly for about the first mile that i drive it, then it drives like brand new. all my connections look good... so i did some investigating. this motor says d15b2 which according to my search is a dx motor? but all the junk ef hatches/crx's i have seen at the junkyard have some tiny dinky looking intake manifolds while this one is much bigger and doesnt look like its from a geo metro (lol)
i dont know, is this an si, if so does it have like a dx block with an si head (if possible) and what of all this could be causing the backfiring? also the check engine light comes on after about 5-10 minutes of drive time.
thanks for the help,
shaun

Only the 90-91 crx si has 4 wheel disc brakes..(im speaking for usa models)
All the SI models have sunroofs standard..
Yes the D15b2 is from the 88-91 DX cars..And the reason the intake manifold looks different then yours "dinky looking" is because they are dual point fuel injection and you have multi point fuel injection....Whoever had the car before you probably blew the stock D16a6 and just used the D15b2 as a cheap replacment and reused the stock d16a6 intake manifold,distributor,etc..
To check if its really an si carfax it..it will say 1.6Liter mpfi or mfi..
Since you just bought it you should do a tune up..plugs,cap,rotor,fuel filter, air filter, oil change, etc just to be safe..
Maybe the check engine light has to do with the backfiring,,maybe it doesnt but either way you will have to check out what code its throwing and fix it....
To do so you have lift the carpet to expose the ecu,,Now there is a light on the ecu that blinks and tells you the codes (red light)..You turn the key to the on position and look at the light blinking on the ecu,, 1 shortblink is 1.....1 long blink is 10.....So for example if you get 3 shortblinks thats code 3.......If you get 1 long blink and 3 short blinks thats code 13........Once you get the code go here for troubleshootinghttps://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=468260
ecu location and light

is this what you're seeing at the junkyard? thats dual point fuel injection setup..Comes in the dx,lx,and std,...The si,ex,and hf all have multi point fuel injection..

Mr. speaker just told you pretty much the defintion of ef HAHAHA/// good luck man, you will catch on quick, these are pretty simple cars, but you will run into things everyonce in awhile and thats why we are all here. to help and get help
Mr.speaker covered it all pretty well. Do the tuneup and find out what the CEL is about.
If you find any of that discouraging, you can look on the bright side...
(a) the '88 Si were the lightest of the Si
(b) the '88 si has more responsive handling traits because of some rear suspension differences that were changed for '89+. Apparently the average owner back then found it too darty.
(c) unless you do some kind of damage or the car rusts apart, its never going to lose anymore value. You can fix the small hiccups and turn around sell the car for $1500 pretty easily, even after driving it for a couple years.

you could also check the vin number to find out what it is

thanks for the help guys, yes mr. speaker, that is the intake manifold i am talking about. mine is "nicer" i guess. so it is probably the si manifold on a d15 longblock then?
i checked the light on the ecu and it said code 1 which is the o2 sensor so ill have to go play with that some time. checked the vin and it is definitely an si. thanks guys i appreciate it.

well the CEL was an o2 sensor light so i did the trouble shooting they listed to do... i am getting about .09v to the o2 sensor as opposed to the .4-.6 i should be getting... i wonder if its probably just the ecu? i hope so because i do not want to be going through an entire harness trying to find the problem.

The manifold in the red car pictured above is from a DX (or "standard")--not an Si. The Si has a "log" manifold which is a tube that lays left-to-right behind the cylinder head.
In the following image, it's the lighter-colored thing in the top-center of the photo:
