Default Question About Oil Change

I have amsoil 10-w30 in my Euro-R H22 with a Hamp oil filter. My last oil change was about 5 or 6 months ago so i'm guessing that is about 5k miles for me. Amsoil claims that their oil is good for 25k miles or one year, whichever comes first. Hamp also has a similar claim i believe. I was thinking about doing an oil change tomorrow. Should i change the oil and not the filter? Change both? Or is it really ok to go a whole year (probably about 12k miles for me) without an oil/filter change? Thanks ahead of time for the help

I change my oil filter more often than the oil itself. Usually oil every 10k (km) and filter every 5k, even though I use synthetic. Some may argue that this mileage can be easily pushed much farther.

I would inspect the oil, if it looks very black, then I'd change it. Do change the oil filter with the oil though, that's for sure. My guess is that you can probably use the oil longer safely, but whether it's the best thing to do, I don't know.

I realize that I didn't make much of a yes/no statement, but oil is one of those things that everyone has their own opinion, and can be argued either way. You just have to see what you think is best.

You really should be fine for the whole year.

Although I tend to do the oil and filter together, I could probably get away with just changing the filter often enough. The amount of oil I always have to feed my engine means that it never gets that old...

While your engine does burn oil, it doesn't quite burn bigger dirt or metal particles, which is why oil changes are needed, to dump those out of the system.

That's why replacing the filter is a good idea.

you can't just tell oil is bad by how black it is.....

get a blackstone oil analysis and it will tell you the life of the oil left as well as other neat info.

thanks for adding to the clutter by 1) not asking the experts who made the oil themselves, 2) not asking the experts who made the filter themselves, 3) not searching the 1000000 oil threads out there already......

anyways, for anything oil related, http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ is pretty much the undisputed place to go for anything oil, despite the owners manual saying to change oil/filter every 10k miles in mild conditions and 5k miles in harsh conditions, most people here still change their oil every 3k miles, meaning either take the companys word when they say how long their product lasts, or find a place like bob's that is an expert in something as complicated as oil

I change my oil filter every two oil change, or depending on how long you last change your oil filter. If you cant remember the last time you change your filter, just change it.

Leaving an old filter when you change your oil every 3,000 means the new oil you just put in will automatically get dirty from the old filter. So change the filter every time you change your oil. If your oil lasts more than 3,000 miles, then still change the filter every 3k and make sure to add an extra 1/2 quart after you do it. I work at Jiffy Lube and know this for a fact and from experience.

that bolded statement right there is a giant ******* DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY....

also, since the oil system is one way, before any oil moves from the pan to engine parts, its has to pass through the filter, sure when it hits the dirty side of the filter itll become dirty, but when it passes the the filter, that newly acquired dirt will get FILTERED OUT, now of course depending on the number of miles that filter is designed to last, its filtering ability may not be what it was before, but it still is performing its job and filtering the oil before the oil moves on to the internal parts of the engine

i dont know of a car built after 1994ish where the manual says to change the oil/filter every 3k miles, even my dads 1970 corvette manual says 5k and 10k changes and thats with oil, filter, and engine technology almost 40 years old, only gas stations and jiffy-expletive-you-in-the-*** lubes say 3k miles, even the dealership will tell you come back in 2k miles if you try to change your oil there at 3k (the good ones at least), why does everyone listen to habeeb at jiffy lube over the owners manual?!?!?!?!?!?!?! but then again, i guess the millions spent developing engines by engineers at honda went to waste because habeeb knows more than them and is about to make a profit of $20 on a $21 oil change with 25 cents a quart oil and a filter thats about as good a screen door
