i just picked up a block to do a fresh bottom up motor build. The block sat in someones garage for quite awhile and the walls are kind of rusted and you cant easily see the cross hatch. The local engine shop wants to charge me 60 bucks to to run the hone through it real quick...
so my question is...can i do this myself? i dont imagine it is too difficult, and i can get the tool for 20 bucks (looks reputable) here -- http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump...ODUCT
any input?

If you're doing a fresh bottom up motor build you might want to stop now and realize that cutting corners isnt going to get you anywhere. Do it right the first time and never worry about it again.
If theres rust on the cylinder walls a slight hone might not be enough to get rid of it. Have the machine shop do it, bring them your pistons and let them know the maximum piston to wall clearance you can have. They'll be able to tell you if you can get by with just honing the block or if it needs to be bored.

I dont blame you, I have that mentality as well, But you're dealing with a fine line of doing it right and doing it wrong when it comes to clearances.
