Engine builders...what's the usual amount to hone out cylinders to straighten it out?
Before I order my pistons, the choice in sizes are std, .010 (.25mm), and .060 (.50mm) *if I remember right* but what is the usual amount the machine shop bores/hones off to straighten out the cylinder? This is going on an old d16a6 w/ around a 'claimed' 140k miles. I'm sure the std piston will be too small with so many miles on the block it's honed a little off itself I'm sure. The numbers are off of JE's website and I might of gotten one of em wrong so feel free to correct. Thanks for all the help. -sean

depends on the machine shop but usually the material removed isnt a big deal. the shop i took my block to says .001-.003 at most

no no no no no....
you are confusing the terms.
If you are concerned that youre bores are not straight then you can have a shop
punch out or overbore the cylinders by .25 or .50 mm
AFTER they do this they are going to hone the cylinders with some sort of stone
(this tool is called "a hone") that will be spun and reciprocate down the bores. The stone is a actually re surfacing the cylinder so that it retains surface oil.
Now as for your question even at 140K + miles I doubt you would need to take off more than .25 over.
But since you are putting new stuff in anyway, I would tell them to bore .50mm over and just order your pistons to that spec.
ohh and good luck with the SOHC

Yea, I had an engine building class a couple years ago, just don't remember the numbers. Anyways, .50 over on stock sleeves? Sorry I didn't mention this, but the block will NOT be sleeved, and I plan to use a moderate amount of nitrous (80ish), so would .50 over be too much and make the cyl. walls much too weak??? and thanks for the help sohc brah

umm I hate to give you an answer like this but check the manual
(maybe search on here too).
I don't know off the top what the limit is, but I will say this, honda sells OEM pistons @ .50mm over yet they do not sell sleeves so my guess is that you are within tolerance.
and as always good luck with the buildup
(maybe search on here too).

Yea but then again Honda never meant for the motors to be squeezed on, so that tolerance might just be for n/a. Crap, I might just have to get cast Integra pistons and do a n/a build (how boring ).

no I don't really think that's how it works. .50 is 1/2 of 1 mm that is not much material at all to take off AT ALL. This is standard practice when boring out an engine you are not gonna effect realiability by doing this.
How big of a shot do you plan on running anyway?
