Default 96 ex 4dr 5spd..my gas mileage is horrible 22mpg

i full 14gallons(just got the car last week) and got 280 outta the 14. i changed the dizzy cap n rotor and im on half rightt now n go abou 155mi out of it. so now im at about 23mpg. i shift the car 3-35k rpm 90% of the time so i dont see why my mileage is so bad. no check engine and the car runs and idles perfect(750rpm). just did oil change too even though the guy i got it from did one a month ago, oil looked good very lil shavings. need tto get this tightened up cuz my other one got about 32 mpg a 2dr lx 95. car only has intake..will be puttin on a gutted cat to see if that helps any.

Shift before 3000 rpms, use only regular unleaded (87 octane). Make sure you air filter is clean, and your fuel filter has been replaced. Check the ignition timing. Check/replace your spark plugs and gap. Test your O2 sensor. Do NOT gut your cat. Gutting your cat will reduce your low-end torque, which will in turn reduce your gas mileage.
