89 civic hatch.. obd1 motor.. lots of questions!!
i have an 89 civic hatchback that is one of my buddies cars and he is wanting to put an obd1 d16 out of a 92-95 civic... my first question is how hard is this going to be wiring wise? am i going to need a jumper harness for the ecu?? also ive read up on it and there is a lot of talk about a resistor box.. call me stupid but i have never worked on an obd0 honda and i have no idea what this is.... how is the distributor and injectors gonna wire up?? is this swap more trouble than its worth? should he just find an obd0 motor?? also is the 89 hatch dual point injection or multi point?? if its dual.. how hard is it gonna be to change it to multi?? and finally my last question is .. will the 4 speed tranny out of his hatch mate to the d16 and work?? thanks in advance for all the help..
is his car an Si?
the wiring isn't too hard if your already mpfi
i did mine with no prior experience
get an obd0-obd1 conversion harness and a p28 ecu
wire in vtec, oil pressure, and a couple other sensors to the ecu
use an si/hf distributor(only 1 bolt hole will line up)
there are lots of write ups on dpfi-mpfi
never done it but it doesnt seem too hard
the 4 spd tranny sucks but it will work with the d16

There are 100's of write ups on doing the dual point to multi point conversions.
Then go to rywire and get the dist adapter so you dont have to repin the dist.
Then conversion harness for the ecu, then once again rywire makes a vtec harness, and run 4 wires from the harness to a 4 wire o2 unless you want to keep it 1 wire and have to disable the O2 heater.
Also the tranny will fit as long as it isnt an 88 because the spline count is different, you will have to end up using a cable tranny anyways unless you get the hyrdro adapter which can be a little mroe than you wanna pay.
So its a plug up swap, everything should pretty much match, unless you do the wiring yourself and save money which isnt hard at all.
But it wouldnt be worth it with a 4spd tranny.
Also with the resistor box is only for peak and hold injectors I belive, might be the other way around. But if you use OBD 1 injectors you wont need to use a resistor box, just make sure if you need one you have one or youll burn up the injector packs or w/e they are called in your ecu.
It sounds like alot but it really isnt, can be done in a day.
