Type S piston questions
i have a h22a JDM engine , from what i gather these are closed deck units ? i want to upgrade to the higher compression type S pistons as im doing a re-build any way . i think the barrel/rings may be worn so i want to rebuild the unit , my questions are :
- is this possible ?
- can i use existing rods ?
- will anything else need to be changed ?
-can the barrel be machined to fit oversized piston +.25mm ?
any other info would be great

ive looked and looked any cant find exaclty what i need , a bit here and there which doesnt add up, if there is anyone who can spare 2 seconds out of their time to make it clear i would be greatly thankful

Yes you can hone the FRM sleeves which H22/H23 all years...If you decided to use over size pistons like you are .25 you will need to send your block off to get power honed to fit the over sized pistons. But it will need to be done with the honda recommended honing process. It can only be power honed not bored I believe which you can do with .25 pistons. As far as rings and the FRM sleeves hastings makes a compatible ring set for the FRM H22/H23 sleeves if you follow the honda hone procedure. As well as Honda OEM rings would work also, more spendy. They also say they have had no problems since 1990. California is where you will need to get on the phone and call around to see who will hone the FRM sleeves following the honda procedure...the price between 200-300.

if your h22a is 92-96:
it is closed deck, stock wrist pins are pressed in, you will either need to have these modified by a machine shop to use floating wrist pins to accept the type-s pistons which are floating, or you will need to get a set of 97-01 rods which are floating to begin with
if your h22a is 97-01:
it is open deck, stock rods are floating which is already compatible with type-s pistons so you will not have to do anything
as far as the oversize pistons go, you may want to rethink it, an extra .25mm in each cylinder will give you hardly any gains, plus if something happens to the cylinder and you need to hone out a scratch in the future, you will be unable to because youve used up all of your safety net and will either have to get a new block or resleeve it, both of which could be costly

I have built quite a few H22A4's and also a H22A7. If you hone the FRM sleeves, it will go right through the .010 thich chromoly coating that is over the FRM material.
you can only take about .003" of material off when you hone. And as far as sleeving goes... why the hell would you replace the FRM sleeves with more FRM sleeves?!?!?! they will not hold but about 12 psi of boost for more than a few thousand miles and they cannot be bored out to fit .025" over type S pistons. you have to have it sleeved to run any oversized pistons. If you do not, the rings will will wear into the sleeves so fast that within 100 miles it will smoke so bad the plugs will foul out. MAHLE makes pistons that are coated with a special coating that you can run and only have to hone the engine a minimal amount.
You have to use type S rods or eagle rods for the type S.... the USDM spec h22a4 rods will not work with type S pistons.... I have tried, it doesnt last.

right ok , the car is starting to smoke in high revs what would you recommend ? i just thought if i was going to do a rebuild i may aswell up the compression ? is this not easy , i thought if it smoked the barrels may be worn as well as the rings? is this not the case

Actually Mahle makes a set of pistons that run 87.00mm, 87.25mm, and 87.50mm. You can actually bore the closed deck blocks .5mm until you get into the reinforcing fibers of the cylinder walls. I know this because I had my H22A bored to 87.25mm on 9.1:1 Mahles, and its held perfect compression, and has been running great for about 14,000 miles. Not to mention stop and go traffic constantly.
