okay i put on a megan racing 4-2-1 header on my ek hatchback with stock d16y7 with a magnaflow oval muffer. at first there was an exhaust leak from where the header connects to the exhaust pipe cause there was no gasket. today i got some bronze high temp sealant to try to fix the exhaust leak. it sounded better but it still sounds shitty from around 3-4k its like farty sounding. how can i fix this. all the nuts and bolts are on tight and theres a shitload of sealant around where the two flanges meet.

and when you say sounds crappy. do you mean exhaust leak crappy or sounds like bee's crappy?

 

not exhaust leak crappy like light weight fart can crappy.. my friend said thats what a lot of cars hes been in sounds like that has a header installed..

 

if im thinking correct you eliminated the cat. which isnt helping your sounds eaither. But its a d with a straight through exhaust. Youre going to have a crap sound.

carsound? catco? random technology? stock?

 

are you running the stock mid-pipe? don't forget a resonator after the cat, that'll help alot if your not running one currently.

I had my apexi N1 catback, then i tossed a test pipe in there witht he stock exhaust manifold, sounded ok. Then came the header. Super loud, raspy up top, but still very quiet inside the vehcile and now the turbo N1 is just as quiet as stock, just deep sounding. Love it.

I would first try getting a bigger resonator. Are you runing the stock piping though with just a magnaflow muffler or a magnaflow cat back. I know some people that had the cat back and they always sounds like ****. But if your running the stock piping id suggest getting bigger piping first and while your putting bigger piping 21" resonator.

a resonator will def help if thats the case.

 

thanks for all the helps guys. one more question though. before i put on the header with just the magnaflow oval muffler it was reallll quiet and i liked it. just deep in mid to high end rpms. but after replacing the stock exhaust manifold it got the farty raspy sound but i can hear it coming from the motor area. cause the exhaust is still really quiet. would the resonator make the farting noise stop from the header area. sorry i dont know anything.

 

are you sure you fixed that exhaust leak between the header and mid-pipe? i'm not sure exactly what your hearing from your header. a resonator will help quiet things down and get rid of raspiness.

 

i think i sealed it pretty well but i lowered the car before checking. im probably gonna jack the car up today to check it out. anyways i put a lot of sealant on and i was thinking about it and maybe a small leak is still escaping you think it would be safe to wrap some muffler tape around where the two flanges meet on top of the sealant to make sure. i dont know i bet that doesnt even make sense.

check the flange where the header connects to itself you may have blown that gasket. i have a few times and it bugs the **** out of me. the gasket costs 35.00 and i don't feel like replacing it again. well maybe one more time and the i'll torque all 3 bolts to 20 lbs/ft.

 

i wouldnt have even changed out the stock exhaust manifold but it had a bad crack and im just trying to solve it in the cheapest way possible without having a shitty sounding car. ill check all the gaskets later. thanks againe everybody.

 

get the right gasket and if you don't have a resonator add one.
