Possible Tranny Problem or Just Bad Driving??

I've got a 91 Si Hatch with a DOHC ZC/CRX Si tranny with a lightened flywheel. The car was purchased this way.
For some reason when the car is cold and I take off in first it's ok but the second I push the clutch in to change gears it jerks really hard and I feel something "slam"
It does this up until the car gets warm and then it seems to go away for the most part. Is there something I am doing wrong?
Another thing that bothers me is that I have to shift pretty fast to stay within optimum RPM range because if I don't then the RPM's dive down very fast and I get the same type of harsh engagement when I go into the next gear. When this happens I hear a "pop" coming from the left side.
The car runs and handles like a dream but this is really worrying me. Anyone have symptoms like this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's what it's like driving a car with a lightened flywheel. You have to either upshift fast or take more time to modulate the throttle and clutch to smooth the engagement.
The pop might be too much clearance in the CV joint, or it could be a mainshaft thrust clearance issue. The worst case scenario would be too much thrust clearance on the crankshaft.

Thanks for the reply.
I will take it into a Service station to check the CV joints. They don't click at all when I turn but the drivers side does pop if I am going over speed bumps or driveway entrances. It's the kinds of pop that reminds me of popping your joints(if that helps
). Is the CV joint clearance issue easily fixed? How about the thrust clearance on the crankshaft?

People spend a lot of money to get zc/si hybrids do to their closer-ratio gears. It makes you faster, however you have to "shift fast"
