Going to have retainers replaced at honda..
It seems people that frive their s2ks (ap1s( hard alot are reporting cracked retainers....so i figure id replace my retainers with 04 retainers. Anyone have any idea the cost of the retainers and the labor hours it takes to do it. I know they dont have to pull the head, as they can compress the cylinder....anyone?
retainer itself would cost about $50.00
if u do this @ dealer they'll costs u an arm & a leg.. they'll probably tell u that the head has to come off and charge u an arm.
i think the dealer would probably charge close to $800-$1000, if u have your head pulled out.. if not, maybe $500-$800.00.
i would suggest go make a new friend.

I was thinking of checking mine, and chaging them if needed. Does any company's make aftermarket Ti retainers for the F20-22c motors? I know they are made by everyone and there mother for the B-series.....
As far as getting the labor done..You can rent the tool at pep-boy's. It hooks up to your air compressor, and it screwed into the spark plug hole in your cylinder head. It keeps the combustion chamber filled with air so the valve doesn't drop while you remove the retainer... It is a delicate job though. Can be vary tedious.

u don't have to have air compressor. yes, it makes your life easier. if u can't get a air compressor, you do this by turning your piston to TDC then use magnet to hold the valve. I recommend using snap-on universal valve spring compressor.

I had JUN titanium retianers in my b18c5 when i had my integra, after 10k, the outter seat was completelty worn and broke off......inspected all the retainers and they were all like that. I then replaced them with portflow titanium retainers, they only last a bit longer....it's a known drawback for titanium retainers

Ti retainers have a max. life of 25k miles and can be more or less depending on fit. I recommend checking them after 10k miles during oil changes. You can start to see the valve dropping down.
Unlike what many people are lead to believe, Titanium isn't the greatest metal known to man though it is very light for its strength, it is prone to galling.
My problem with the 04 retainers is that they are heavier. The guys with the AP1's who might switch over to 04 retainers should note that it will be much easier to over-rev the car. I don't know the exact weight difference but even a slight difference in weight would be much larger given the forces at work.
