I have a bone stock 91 RS, nothing done to the motor and runs fine and clean, I'm sure it will pass my smog test only except for the fact that I dont have my Speedo cable plugged in because I swapped clusters and wasn't able to get the speedo cable into the cluster cause my hand is too big.

Anyway my check engine light turns on due to this, I've been told its the speed sensor, but I was wondering if I have to get this fixed in order to pass test only smog, or could I just take it in like that.

The check engine light only comes on when I let off the gas in 4th and 5th gear while on the freeway or high speeds.

This is a really good question, I don't know actually. I think they might say you have a CEL but it is passes the sniffer and visual I think it would pass.

 

A CEL showing is an automatic fail.
