What kind of damage could an amp get?
A week ago I sold a 600 watt amp to someone on ebay. He just emailed me this:

Hey this amp is no good.... i would like a refund.
I had guys from cartoys do the work and it wouldnt
power on and they looked inside of it and part of the
board is black like it has been set on fire.</TD></TR></TABLE>

I'm like *FUUUCK*. (because I'm nice and will actually grant him the refund if it is indeed not good). But is he messing with me? He has good ebay feedback. What could have gone wrong with it? Honestly, it was working fine when I pulled it, although there was some alternator whine. It sat in my basement for maybe 5 or 6 months between uninstallation and when it was sold. It never overheated or even got hot. What should I do about this?

well it a " he say she say" deal now. Did you put no refunds on your site or as is. Its going to be hard to say what the out come is going to be. It could be that the install was to cause or shipping damage. I wish you luck

my advice -- request a copy of his cartoys receipt.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Beat me to the point.
Or if you are 100% give him 80% back

I would suggest that you do a refund. First receive the amp, inspect the amp. Do a 75% or 80% percent refund and explain why. Be a sales person and try to make him understand. If he is really is unhappy then do a 85 or 90% reason with him. Last thing you want is a very nasty negative remark in Ebay. Then no one will trust you. Good luck.

Well I'm calling this cartoys place tomorrow to verify that the amp is fried. Assuming they confirm that, I'm having him ship it back at his own expense if he wants his refund. Then probably sell it as-is for less to someone else. I'll refund him 100% of the $ he paid but not the shipping $. Thanks for the help, guys.
well 2 things cartoys could of fried it during insatll
they looked inside of it and part of the
board is black like it has been set on fire. They are not allwed to open or modifi
company rules so eather the dudes full of crap or they did it anyway
another thing is with it opened it voided warrenty
my 2 cents

my 2cents, the shop most likely fried it. if it was working fine when you pulled it out, i don't think the shipping would caused anything bad. another thing if you would of accidentaly fried it when you disconnected it you would easily tell the smell especially if it was that bad inside that **** stay for days. and yes your warrantly is now void.
If Cartoys opened it, it's their problem now. That was stupid. Unless the customer authorized it, then it's on the customer. I've had amps start smoking as soon as I hooked up power (and the fuse doesn't always blow). I don't need to take it apart to tell the customer that his amp is DONE. I could get suspended for opening an amp.
It's criminal if you re-sell it knowing full well that it's bad, unless you tell the new buyer that it is in fact bad.

I'm pretty sure the warranty ended a while ago, so the points moot. I had no idea about opening it voiding the warranty though. That kind of makes me think this isn't my responsibility at all, because everything looked/smelled/sounded PERFECT before shipping.
I'd never sell something that is knowingly damaged to some unsuspecting person. Someone on this site actually inquired about buying it after seeing this thread. "I'll buy your burnt amp." One well-done amp coming up.
I still have a couple questions...
- What exactly could have fried it when I was disconnecting?-what'd I do wrong?
- Can cartoys be held responsible somehow?
