Default Made a dumb *** mistake, now need help

Last night I was helping a friend swap a b16 into his 91 hatch. Got it all in and ready to go. Cranked a bunch of time and nothing. Checked for spark and it was good, right firing order. Pulled the plugs and no gas. Checked the fuel filter and gas was there. There was something on the plugs but not really fuel. I thought maybe water go in the fuel rail when whoever cleaned it. So I get this dumb *** idea to just dump some fuel into the IM. Well more fuel than I wanted got into there, and when it cranked a huge back fire lit off and the engine seized because of all the fuel in the chamber. I pulled the plugs cranked the motor by hand and a shitload of fuel shot out of #4. put the plugs back in and went to crank it over and this hideous sound is coming from around the flywheel area. Sounded like the flywheel was grinding. I figured I fucked something up. So we pulled the engine.

Today I tore it down, and it looks fine the #4 rod bearing is marred up, but I don’t see anything wrong, everything turns freely. My buddy took the starter to the parts store and it tested fine. I’m stumped. And ideas.

i dont see how a backfire in the intake mani would make u spin a bearing

what do the teeth on the flywheel/starter look like

and was it runnin when u heard the noise or cranking over?

r the injectors pluged?

I had to do this with my 67 firebird. When you're stuck at the gas station and diagnosing a bad fuel pump, a mountain dew bottle filled with gas is a good stress-reliever.

If it backfired, that would maybe say the cam or ignition timing is off, or the valves need adjustment big-time.

its ok dont feel to bad i managed to put my buddies head gasket on the wrong way last night and yes the oil was flowing out the back beetween the head and block like a river. i have always heard of people doing this but i had done tons of motors and switched out just as many heads i figured haha that will never happen to me but i guess we all make mistakes. and another shitty part was somehow my friend when we got it all fixed at like 4 am managed to stick the dizzys teeth into the cam backwards and being 180 degrees out made it jump timing while trying to start it but i re-set the TDC and moved the dizzy..... when u got a guy like me running on no sleep and a couple high buddies trying to swap heads somethings bound to F up but it runs awsome now and it moves like a raped ape now. so dont feel to bad WE ALL MESS UP HAHAHA GL

Ok ripped the motor apart to check for all the fucked up things that hydraulicing an engine can cause. Didn’t find any thing but a fucked rod bearing. I doubt that it was caused by aforementioned mistake, but replaced it while I had the engine apart. Turned out to be the starter making that noise. And the fitting to the fuel rail was the wrong one cut off the fuel. Thanks go out to Larry for stopping by and giving a hand!!!

damn reminds me of when i was helping a friend change his headgasket not too long ago. We forgot to jb weld shut the air injection holes on his new intake manifold so we had to pull it back off the engine. When we did that we neglected to pull the coolant line off of the manifold that runs near the #4 cylinder. Long story short coolant poured into the #4 cylinder, we didn't notice it and voila bent rod
