I don't really want to drop more than around $150 (ebay or store bought). I've been checking out the dvc Solobaric's on ebay, but was hoping for a recommendation or two before I buy one.
I'm not adverse to buying a smaller name brand than Kicker or JL just as long as sound quality is decent.
The sub would be installed in a pre-fab Q-logic box going into my '97 ITR.
thanks!
Matt

Why do you want a ported box?</TD></TR></TABLE>
Says who.
Properly built ported box can have the same SQ as a sealed box anytime.
Keyword is properly.
Might could find a Type R for around 150,gotta look a lil though. Some incredible output, and good SQ.
Or Kicker Comp VR,sound decent as well.

Thank you, so much false info being said. Mr deadman please keep info like that off our boards. Everyone knows a ported box would be about 3db louder then a sealed box. A sealed box would be smaller then a ported. If you have space go ported. If you have space concern go sealed.

Or you could go with a passive radiator. Advantages of a ported box in the space of a sealed one.

yea, but to much of a pain to build, and the cost. I would not waste my time on building on of theses. But infinity makes good one thou. But You won't in my imo get the same sound as a good built ported and sealed box. Don't get me wrong you can come close.

It's just like building a sealed box, except that you're sticking a PR (or two) in it too, so one (or two) more round holes to cut. Big pain, I know.

I know you won't get the same sound as a ported box; you will get better sound. A properly designed PR box will have the same response as a ported box, and will sound better, since there is no port to make noise. But then again, a properly designed ported box will sound just as good. As I said before, you can use a PR in a small (sealed size) box to get a response which would require a huge port (the port could take up as much room as the box) or a huge box.

It's all about compromises. The PR box (including PRs) would be the most expensive, but will yield ported box results in a sealed box size.

Not everyone cares about being louder. IMO a sealed box will sound better than a ported one any day.
Everyone has their own ears, so don't tell me that I'm wrong just because you're partial to ported boxes.

Actually it's a box that can be ported or sealed.
It's just that you need higher power to really take advantage of a well-built sealed box. I'm only running around 300 rms.

If your sub rms is 300, your not going to go above that if the box was ported or not, Ported you can go a lil lower then rms. same with sealed too, but it will sound better if closer to the rms.

Do you have a lonk to the eBay Solobarics, if they are a comp VR first thay are a 400W sub and min. recommended vented box is 1.75 cuft + port volume, and it is a big port, min. sealed is 1 cuft.
If you go with this sub, I would use up the extra .25 cuft with bracing for that pre-built Q-logic. [in my constitutionally protected opinion] POS box, and do a sealed box.
If you are just looking to get bass into the car as easily and inexpensively, find a sub that is 300W RMS and will work in a 1.25 cuft, like a JL Audio 12W3v3, [-2 if the amp is stable at 2 ohms] min. sealed box volume is 1.25 cuft.
