Default burnt rod bearing, what to do?

I literally got done tearing down a b18 block with no more than 5k i bought some time ago cheap since it was knocking. It was obvious while doing the tear down that the #1 rod bearing was starved for oil (will post pics once camera is returned), the surface of the bearing had melted and became very rough. All other bearing still look totally new (still able to see the crosshatch on rods and mains). The whole rotating assembly was originally balanced and blueprinted, but where that bearing burnt is now discolored (hope to save the crank).

After tear down the idea was to send the whole thing to a machine shop, have it inspected, to find the cause of the knock. Since i now know the cause should i still send it out to get checked or is the crank beyond repair.

Also i know need to find the cause of this lack of oil if i am to save this engine but i have no clue as to where to look. I don't know enough about how the oil passages inside the block work to figure it out. While on this subject, i would like to see pics of peoples oil "squirters" and to know how well they keep the bearings lubed and where they get their oil pressure from?

What is the best course of action?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the oil squirters only come in vtec motors? I also thought that they squirt up into the cylinder? You'll either have to get the specs for the crank and a set of mics and mic it or have your machinist do it and see if it needs to be grinded down and polished.

Didn't know they squirted the walls but i thought i saw somewhere aftermarket oil suirters i don't know where they got their oil from?

I think i'll leave mic'ing to the machinist but would like to know if i could save the charge if i knew the crank is now garbage.

Chances are if you burnt up a rod bearing that the journal on the crank is crap too, so either buy a new crank or get yours machined and buy oversized bearings.

Are oversized bearings as good as the OEM ones or are they weaker?

I used .10 over rod and main bearings in a d16z6 rebuild and never had a problem and it still runnin to this day. There is nothin wrong with oversized bearings.

I wouldn't reuse that crank. That bearing spun pretty badly...and chances are if it spun with that crank, it will spin again.

get the crank checked by a reputable machine shop, from the pics i dont see that much scoring on the journal...can you feel the scoring with your fingernail?

Just take it to a reputable machine shop and have them throw some micrometers on it. It doesn't looked scored bad enough to not be salvageable. They can grind and polish that thing up to .30 over so, get it grinded and micropolished and you should be good to go.

Oh yea, and get that block bored out, cuz that thing is smoked. That cylinder looks like it hasn't had oil in it for a minute.

you should think about getting a type r oil pump instead of the stock one you have
the type r gives you more oil psi
