Default Did some testing with the air box lid off: data inside

After reading alot of posts about heatsoak with air box lid off, i did some testing today with my datalogger. I gathered a bunch of data so you can be the judge about this mod. Skip to the cliffnote if you are too lazy to read.

CAR: 2000 s2000 ap1

Car is in excellent condition, compression and leakdown is well within spec, no MIL/CEL.

Drivetrain Modifciation: Spoon Snorkel, Gutted airbox, K&N filter

The Test: I seperated the test into two parts, first is local and the second part is freeway, the outside temp. in my town is 72F(according to Yahoo Weather), i have to do the testing at night since the traffic around here sucks major ***** during daytime. The car is well warmed up and cool down time is provided between runs. All unit in F.

Test 1: Local Driving(0-40mph in light traffic)

With Lid ON

Air Temp: 131-149
Coolant Temp: 188-203

Special note: I did a run with redline/vtec until 40mph result:

Air Temp: 129-145
Coolant Temp: 194-203

With Lid OFF

Air Temp: 143-150
Coolant Temp: 192-213

Special note: Idle at 149F after first minute of stoppage.

Test 2: Freeway/Highway Driving(65-80mph with light traffic)

With Lid ON

Air Temp: 111-140
Coolant Temp: 183-194

Special note: Achieved 111F at 80mph

With Lid OFF

Air Temp: 122-149
Coolant Temp: 184-206

Special note: Achieved 122F at 80mph

The Verdict

The testing shows lower air temperture is acheived consistently and repeatedly with the air box lid on, however i make no claims about throttle response since i do not have a dyno or G-tech meter handy.

CLIFFNOTE: Lid on = cooler

If you guys want to do some testing with CAI, Vented hood, different filter, air box mod, we can do it in local meet.

Comment, opinion is always welcome

As expected. You should note whether or not you have a vented hood, I'm positive it makes a difference in underhood temp, at least when you're moving.

Expected but the difference seems small. I doubt anyone can feel the performance difference.

10 degree seems small to you?

everyone talking about heatsoak and no one did anything to test it, that's why i did it in the first place.

a vented hood would help both when stopped and moving..... we all know heat rises..

you'll notice a 5rwhp notice...... how do i know?? because i experienced it on the dyno.... on my final 3 runs back in the days.... i ran 210rwhp... then did another run right after and it came down to 205rwhp.... we waited about 10 minutes, let things cool down a little and ran again and it went up to 208rwhp...

heatsoak is devistating on our engines....

I agree, good info, however, Can I just point out that engine sounds soooo much cooler when you hit VTEC with the airbox cover off......

I havent really done any testing with my DIY intake mod nor do I think it gives any hp gains at all, mainly just a more aggressive sound...I got a complete stock air box from a friend that sold his and I cut out the bottom of the box(and the divider piece) and left the lid on and the side walls of the box.

Think I have any loss with just doing that?

edit: ap1mark on my friend's S/N
