Default Porterfield R4 brakes - Is this the way to go vs. R4S?

Doing lots of autocross, half a dozen track days a year and street driving. Was about to buy R4S pads until a friend told me he has had excellent experience with the R4 for both street and autox - even in cold temperatures.

He said the mild squealing noise was worth it and it went away after a couple of months.

Any thoughts?

Ron

Yes, R4 daily driver.
Yes, they squeal... threshold braking is your friend.
might want to cryo the rotors first, for extra wear.

The R4 isn't as bas as the R4E in that respect, though.

Oh, and wax the wheels and wash the car regularly.

what do you mean by cryo?

I don't ever wash my car - am I going to screw up the wheel finish?

Personally, i think the R4's wouldn't be an excellent candidate for Auto-x brake pads. I'd keep them strictly for track because they take time to warm up. If you do that many auto-x 's and track events, try to have a set of street/auto-x pads and a set ONLY for track. Oh and Cryo treating your rotors will help preserve them or make them last a bit longer.

R4 for street?? I think you got it backward, R4S is their street/ autox compound and R4 is thier racing compound, R4 is not the best thing for street and autox since they take some time to heat up.

Only problem is the noise.
They heat up very quickly, unlike some of the P+ I'm afraid (which I'll be trying next).
Just stomp on the brakes!
The first moment they heat up, and by the next ... you're stopped!

Then again, maybe there is a reason I've become known as "crazy ed".

OK .. I'm spoiled.
No wonder I don't do many "track" days. No Need.

P.S. Just ordered some "wheel wax"

I'm in the same boat as Zyg. I just never had the time to swap pads out. I think the R4's are making me go deaf. What???

I don't mind the squeal ... makes people pay attention!

It's the tire (sometimes 032R on the street) and the exhaust.
last time back to Ohio I offered the co-driver a fresh pack of earplugs (which he "installed"), and I just turned up the radio.
