Question for the auto body gurus
I'm getting rid of those ugly plastic door panel bumper things on the exterior of my crx. I've already ripped them off and I've filled in the holes where the clips are supposed to go with metal.
Here's what I've got:

So now I want to cap that all off with a nice strip of sheet metal, so everything is smooth. But if I do that there is going to be a space behind there with bare metal exposed = rust magnet. There isn't a way to get in there to oil it every year either.
Is there some type of sealant or something I can use?

Are the holes all welded? They make some stuff that you can paint on the bare metal, and I can't think of what it is called but it will stop the rust. You have a lot of work ahead trying to make that metal look all even and not all wobbly. Check out the place and ask questions here they are a big help.

now the lines on your front and rear bumper are going to run into nothing.
they follow the line you took out. but do what you wish, it is yours
and bondo is your friend but some people look down on it, but in some cases its all you can use

I like they way the cr-X looks as well, with the strips on. Without those it looks too ricey for my taste, but hey its your car and good luck

You guys are all bunch of purists, if it doesn't look EXACTLY like it came from the factory, it's complete ****.
Take a look at the TSX, RSX, and every other late model car. Door bumpers are out kids.
I'm changing all the body lines, there won't be a problem with the flow. I have pictures of CRX's without bumpers. It looks very clean and sharp:

(disregard the front bumper body kit on that car)
I'm trying to use as little bondo as possible. And bondo is pourous, it wont stop rust.

whoa... that car is nice lookin.. except the rims/tailights/corner lights proly headlights/proly painted interior/bodykit... sheesh total rice bucket... but I think it would look good without that rice on it
Bondo is the only way I know how to get it nice n smoothed out after youve done all the metal work, but I'm not a painter or body work person ,Thats all I've seen them do at the body shop around here though.. do all the metal work and smooth out the slight inperfections with bondo.

how will you attach the metal strips to the car?
por-15 underneath the metal strips, smooth it out with minimal amounts of bondo. apply another coat of por-15 over the bondo.
since bondo is porous and por-15 flows like water IMO if you were to put por-15 over the bondo then i would think it would fill the holes and eventually bond to the metal. i did this on my car and no problems yet...

I'm just planning on welding a metal strip overtop of the hole (or ditch as I've been calling it), grinding the welds, and then bondoing over the welds. I'm not concerned about the outside rusting though, I'm concerned about that air pocket inside there, rusting from the inside out.
Like I said, ask here they will be much more help....................
