Sup everyone, my friend and I are having a major problem breaking loose the crank pulley bolt. We're using the special crank pulley tool and a 4ft breaker bar. The problem is, we've broken 4 reducers, cause we're using reducers from a 3/4 down to 1/2 and we've snapped 4 of them already. What is another method we can use to break free the crank pully bolt so I can change my T-belt?

 

Me and my pops used a torch and heated around the bolt to expand it. Key is not to heat the bolt. After all the trying it came right off after doing that. Hope that helps some.

 

but isn't there some type of oil seal around there?

 

are air tools out of the question?

We tried, but didn't work, but we were using one that was only pushing about 130psi.

 

use an old belt around the pulley and some large vise grips or pipe clamp to hold the pulley/belt while the other person turns the bolt.

My friend was looking at some 3/4 sockets and he said none would fit through the crank pulley tool, so I guess I'll see if I can find someone or some place that will take it off for me. Thanks for all the help guys

 

i used a 1/2" drive snap on impact socket on a breaker bar with the end of a floor jack handle on it to make the thing at least 6 feet long. Then i put the bar in the air and jumped on that sucker. Poped off 2nd try. ( also using the snap on crank pully holder.)

No torch, or liquid wrench or anything. Re-torqing that thing is fun as well

 

I dont know if this will help you or not but mine pulley broke a while back and i know that it takes 181 lbs. to tighten so its pretty hard to get off. i got mine off with an electric impact a buddy had. took a while but it came off.

 

we had to have one person stand on the brakes with the car in gear and one person jam a screwdriver in the flywheel opening (near your engine code) and then i gave the breaker bar EVERYTHING i had...finally it broke loose and i got a busted knee for my troubles.

 

haha, i remember the days before i got a good impact, what was worse on my car was the spindle nuts on the axles, but on the crank if you can get the car up high enough or use a large extension you can get a 1/2" drive breaker bar and like a 5 ft cheater bar like 98 type sh was saying, i think those adapters are generally not as strong, or go out and buy a nice impact, sometimes it just takes a massive impact and thats all there is to it

 

We tried all that. We used a cheater bar ontop of the breaker bar, along with a few extensions and jack stand, and still snapped 4 of those 3/4-1/2 reducers

 

then get a 1/2" drive breaker bar and socket. You wont break those. Get craftsmen at the least so in the unlikely event you DO break it, you get a new one for free

Get the car off the ground and on jack stands. Get the socket and breaker bar on so the bar is at about 45 degrees in the air in front of the car. If you are skinny lightweigh people, it may take a few of you all on the bar to bust it loose. Just my 210lb *** jumping on that sucker poped it.

It has just enough play to get the bar level with the car, then lean on it and put all your weight into it. have a friend jump on you if necessary, lol. And when it comes lose, have a good trip to the ground.

brian, not this again, lol, i told you man, for any impact gun to be very effective, you would need a very good comopressor with a lot of air. something that is dual staged.
