Failed Virginia State Inspection, Fogs dont turn on with High beams
So in Virginia every year all cars must get a state inspection, well I just bought my EM1 and the owner before me wired the fogs to be turned on with the parking lights.
So I didnt pass inspection because my fogs DONT turn off with the highbeams on, any way to fix this quickly?

Find the circuit diagram for a relay, get parts at radioshack, then wire them up to the low-beams. I'm guessing you could also cut the wires (possitive lead), hook them to the low-beam's possitive wire, then be set. The only problem is the second method would bypass the switch, and they might find that.
Otherwise rip them out, get it to pass, then put them in.

how long would this take?
how long would this take?
well just depends on what kind of fog lights you have....doubt it would take over 30 mintues, take front bumper off after unplugging them if you can reach them, and unscrew them, then reassemble

just pull the fuse so they dont turn on. its not required to have fog lights to pass. so if they dont turn on at all then they cant judge whether or not they cut off with high beam. do you have the oem switch and does it work. the harness that comes with those lights(oem, or aftermarket oem replica) plugs in the fuse box to the park light acc. socket.so if they cut on and off with park lights they might be wired correctly. if not you could move the wire that energizes the circuit from the park lights to the low beam wire , or you can run the power from the park lights through a relay before it gets to the fog light relay, and hook the high beam wire to it and use the relay to cut power to the fog lights when the high beams cut on. similar to a starter kill. hope this helps, but i would just pull the fuse get it passed and put it back in. much less work.

Here is how a relay works:
Terminals:
85 & 86 POWER the relay. One must be + and one must be -.
30 - Common. Can be + or -, depending on what your switching.
87 - This has whatever is connected to 30, when the relay is POWERED
87a - This has whatever is connected to 30, when the relay is NOT POWERED
In other words, if the foglights go on with the parking lights, then either terminal 85 or 86 is connected to the + of the parking lights and the other terminal has a solid ground.
Take that power wire and disconnect it from the parking light circuit, and tap it into the + LOW BEAM circuit.
Now, the fog lights will ONLY be on when your low beams are on, and will go off when you shut off the headlights, or turn on the high beams.

Most Northern states that have yearly insp have it so an lights on a vehicle must work. so just unplugging them will not work.

Don't do this unless you want to melt your car wiring. You need to install a relay to switch the light on and off. tap this off the low beam wiring and run dirct. off the battery

that sucks, in NC if its not required lights they dont matter. my mom had a 96 grand am that was notorious for blown fog light bulbs, but passed every year. I dunno looks like some rewiring in your near future. good luck

Congrats.
Congrats.
another option that I did while living in VA, if the fogs are unplugged AND covered (think Hella fogs) then they don't check them. Insp station I went to told me to put a cover on them and pull the cable off the battery and they'd pass. Did it, and it did.
