biometrics branches out to pretty much anything that's unique to your body.. but yeah... i'm aiming at fingerprints

i know what it is lol, just wanted you to get more specific. Its a good idea, but that may get rather expensive. I mean you could rip one off a security door lock, but those are hard to come by. You'll have better luck using a key-pad, mainly because there are available applications. But that's just my opinion. Plus, what happens if someone else has to drive your car for some reason?

Well the way I can see doing it now is rigging up a carputer and they make fingerprint readers for those readily available. Then I'd need a buddy to write some custom software for authentication... rigged to a serial controller to activate a relay hooked up to the ignition and or door locks. Maybe one where the key hole is and on the dash next to the ignition..

And I can program more than 1 fingerprint for someone who might drive it regularly. Then find someway to have a valet system.

carputer+serial port, that may work. But i wouldn't bypass the key ignition. I'd use it as a fuel cut-off.

Put in the key, turn to accessory, gives power to the carputer, scan fingerprint, ignition. <-great idea

keep me posted.

what car are you driving? I'm thinking about rigging up a carputer in the glovebox. a little bit of collaboration wouldn't hurt. I've done a bit of research as to making those.

as for the valet, i'd have an option in your software to disable the scanning and automatically enable the ignition. set that before the person uses it.

have that maybe set on a timer for like 2 boot ups and then fingerprint is reenabled. This will take a while to get up and running, don't have the funds... but I am making plans.

maybe a switch in the car door that when opened it boots up the PC. then at the PC logon it requires a fingerprint... then a script to hit the serial relay upon logon... and then a hard wired hidden backup switch just in case

OH! new idea... have a pager alarm system... then have a relay for unlocking to car door to turning on the PC and then a shutdown for locking the doors. hmmm

I think a lot can be done with serial controllers and relays

What is this going to solve? A simple brick through the window and popping the ignition lock and the systems done.

Kudos for the idea, but how is this any more secure than a good alarm? Wires still jumped...

Remove the immobilizer sensor (assuming the car came with an immobilizer) from the ignition. Wire up the computer so that when it senses a programmed fingerprint, it sends the right code to the ecu, enabling you to start the car.

wouldn't work on my 92 lude but could be done. This is more for poops and grins than it is for practical.... but it does mean that you can't just crack the ignition off and turn it with your fingers... like on most older honda's.

Also having the car alarm in conjunction with this system would make it that much tougher TO steal, not necessarily impossible. If theifs want something bad enough... they will get it... easy as that.

But not to mention... it would be really badass

use linux for your operating system. it will boot MUCH faster than windows. whoever you have that would know how to write a program for that serial port, should know how to make this thing work with linux.

I'd still have the thing wired to accessory for the turn-on though. i mean, you might want to use the carputer for more than just a fingerprint scan anyways.

and yes, it would be freakin BA

and not many thieves would look for an electronic fuel cutoff like this, they'd be searching for normal ol' switch. increasing the time it takes them to steal the thing dramatically. I still would like to see someone come out with an electronic hood latch (if they havn't already). and to avoid the flames on that, there ARE ways to activate a latch like that if the battery is dead.
