just how the subject says im runnin a 93 hatch with a d series motor with 220,000 milles, its a trooper. Anyways when i changed a heater core hose in the past i did not loosen the bleeder valve causing an air pocket to develope in the system. after a while the motor would run really hot and in return i would pull over and check the resivour, and it would be empty. I would fill it up and then the car would run hot again. after that i the added coolent to the radiater this time unscrewing the bleeder valve and the problem went away. the about 50 mile later i blew the head gasket due to constant expansion on the head when the motor was running hot. i know have the car torn apart asking you guys for the best techniqe on removing the old gasket material heres some pics

Or you can get in there and use a razor blade and some elbow grease. Unfortunately, that gasket material is a pain to clean off. If you have the tools available to you, you can use a 90 degree die grinder and a plastic roloc disc to clean it up, but make sure you stuff some rags into the cylinders first to keep the bits of dirt and crap out.

I use brake cleaner + putty knife to remove any/all gasket material. It's cheap as hell and works great.

 

The gasket remover will work wonders. My headgasket just came right off though.

I think you need to put some of that elbow greese into cleaning up your engine bay though, that bish is dirty!

 

thanks should i worry aboput shavings getting into the cylender if i use a scraper

i have not had the chance to around to auto parts store yet so when i do ill pic some brake disk cleaner and new head gasket, alreay got the scraper. this sounds like the easiest method. as far as the engine bay goes my dad says that i should gunk it whatever that means. is this gunk stuff good or should i go with something else like simple green?

Best way to clean an engine bay is Simply Green Degreaser. It is much safer than the junk and is bio degradable. The green cleaner, a good hose nosel, and some good rags maybe a stiff brush and some time. You will be amazed what that can go.

Also for your rubber hoses get some foaming tire cleaner and spay it on the hoses to make them look really nice and new.

Gunk will work but it isn't good for the rubber stuff under the hood.

i was waiting for some1 to say that

 

I either use a gasket scrapper with a razor blade and then hit it with my angle grinder with a buffing pad....takes it all off. Just make sure you clean the surfaces and pockets well if you do go that route

 

Wire brush attachment on a dremel to remove material. Then acetone to clean the surface afterwards.
