these three or four wires are all inside this one big black wire cover and are surrounded by this metal wire type protector or something.
the person that previously cut up my harness tied all this loose wire together
what is this for?
is it needed?
can i just cut it off?

well just looking at the wires i cant tell what they are for lol, where do they run after the picture, test them and see if they have power running through them, where do they start and where do they end, they were definatly put in by the previous owners lol you can always tell when people get stupid with wires and use butt connectors, they call them butt connectors cuz they stink
Your engine bay actually looks very unsafe, i would probably get a new chassis and engine harness if i were you, theres all kinds of loose wires all over, all it takes is one spark and a drop of fuel and your engine is up in flames and thats never good
WOW... thats bad.
Looks like your distributor wiring to me
And you're probably not going to want to cut it unless you plan on soldering it back together properly.
As for the unshielded wire in the corner of the pic, i can't tell where it's going so I can't tell what it is.
Rywire can repair the harness for you for between $50 and $100 depending on how bad it is. If it's just the distributor wiring, you're lookin at $60 shipped.

i didn't really ask how to clean up my wiring, the reason it looks like that is because im cleaning it up, re soldering it and re looming it correctly. i dont feel like paying someone to do something im fully capable of.
this isn't how the wiring looked when i was driving the car, everything was soldered, heat shrunk and protected with loom, but im re-doing some of it to shorten and clean up the harness routing a bit.
its going to the main harness that runs up to where the fuse box is, and then into the cockpit to the ecu
i believe the one is the dizzy wiring,
but back to my question, this wire that is surrounding the real wires, is it needed?
if you think im gonna pay 60$ to solder two wires and have 3 weeks extra downtime your freaking nuts

no one told you how to clean up your wiring just trying to help it be safe, so it runs to two places the fuse box and the ecu??
Edit: or it comes from your ecu to the harness by the fuse box
More pictures would also boost up the help we can offer

the are TDC and Crank sensor wires (to the dizzy)
from factory they are sealed inside that bigger thicker wire and you cant see that metal insulator wire, but when you cut the wires to do the mpfi swap you have to connect the two wires seperately inside the biggar one and you are left with this isulator wire

It's called a shield or drain.
It's probably tied to ground somewhere, the idea is to block noise and prevent interference into the TDC and CYL sensor/ECU connection.
You could (in order of most to least recommended) solder and heatshrink a piece of copper braid over it, tie them together with another piece of wire, or cut it off.
Also, I think that shield *may* be made of something impossible to solder, it's been a while since I've had to deal with it.
There's a good post here somewhere, I cannot recall the title..If I think of it, I'll let you know.

your best off taking the harness out of the car, and re taping/soldering it(it looks like there is alot of added wire that needs fixin up)... You can cut the shield off at that end(circled area).
