Default timing belt removal

trying to remove the belt to remove head. i marked the cam gears to tdc but can't seem to mark the crank pulley cause the cover is in front of the belt, do i need to mark crank to tdc or can i try to keep it tdc as possible when putting head back on? need tips

there is a mark on the crank pulley itself and the lower timing belt cover where, when those two are lined up, the engine will be at TDC for #1.
