OK Guys,

I got a lot of inquiries about my cat back system, but many of you know it is currently sold as a kit or I'll build it on your car at my shop. I do plan to market a bolt on system some time this year but I still don't know an eta. My system will utilize 2-1/2" OD 16g (.065") 304 stainless steel tubing with a resonator and muffler with a conservative tip.

Here is what I propose. I'm willing to have a run of mandrel bent tubing made and I'll sell it as a kit of 3 pieces. The first will have the offset in the B pipe like stock and will be for the section between the cat and the resonator, the second section will be after the resonator and around the gas tank and finally the third section will be the piece going over the axle. All 3 pieces will be made a little longer on each end with the exception of where the B pipe meets the cat and that end will be flared to a 2-1/2" ID. The basic kit will be the 3 sections of tubing, the next option will be adding a Magnaflow resonator and muffler. If the Magnaflow pieces are ordered with the tubing kit you will get a discount on those. I'll also offer all the necessary hangers/flanges/gaskets that may be needed.

This will make building this system much easier then what I've offered before but a few joints will still need to be welded. The tubing will be 2-1/2" OD 18g (.049") 304. I expect this kit to be reasonably priced but pricing will be determined by how many kits I get orders for and I will need a deposit for each tubing kit before I make the order. There is a possibility that the tubing could as be polished for an additional cost.

With these sections built a little longer they could be used on both 2 door and 4 door cars. I expect I could have these ready to ship in 5-6 weeks.

 

Sounds interesting. I think I might have to get the S bend after the resonator and the axle piece.

Yes, those are the resonators and mufflers I sell. No they are not as quiet as stock, I don't know anything that really is. A 22" long resonator and the muffler do a very good job though. The folks that have these systems or know of people with them can answer your question. What I will tell you is I don't feel this system sounds as loud a the other cat back systems out there. Some other systems require the use of a silencer and all that does is decrease the size of the outlet at the muffler. Also most cat back system really just use a resonator at the rear and not a true (larger) muffler. I know the Kamimoto has a large muffler but most of the others don't.

The 2-1/2" tubing combined with those 2 Magnaflow pieces do an excellent job of uncorking the system and still it's quieter then the N1, Tanabe RM and probably some more.

When we tested my ITR header, a test pipe and this cat back system on RStoR's car we actually lost about 2 HP running an open header vs. the full exhaust.

Here's a dyno graph of George Knighton's ITR with a JDM ITR header, 2-1/2" Car Sound cat and my exhaust, plus a CAI..nothing else. George is also one of the elders of the board and is not too crazy about listening to an exhaust that sounds like a lactose intolerant 16 year old who just got finished eating pizza and drinking milk.

How thin can you go on the tubing? You mentioned 18g and 16g. Is it worth it for weight savings? We're planning a thinwall 2.5" set-up for my b20vtec civic hatch with the same muffler/resonator combo.

Dave could you make your system with an "N1 style" muffler? Just curious..

 

Sounds good. Depending on price and where I'm at then money wise (my military pay got screwed up) I'm in.

 

I would definitely be interested in one towards the end of the summer hopefully.

George Knightons graph really impressed me a while back

 

If I try to draw up multiple types of axle back sets ups that will increase the price I'm sure. What I planned for the axle back portion was tubing that stayed near the floor after the suspension. This is how I do it for my systems and it really helps for clearance around the suspension pieces by keeping the tubing high. Tis is how the stock ITR set up is and these systems that use a straight through resonator/muffler in the rear need the tubing lower so the tip will be level to the ground or the can ends up being on an angle.

Jeff, 18g is the thinnest for mild or stainless steel (at a reasonable cost), but when I do my system I'll most likely go 16g for durability. 2.50" 18g weighs 1.28lbs/ft and 16g is 1.69 lbs/ft.

Will there be a possibility of getting one of these kits for an EF hatchback?

 

I could probably get the tubing bent for most of the more common set ups under a few conditions.

1. I may need to do at least 5 sets of each system. &lt;ost people don't realize what is needed to set the mandrel bender up for each piece and it wouldn't be cost effective to do it for just 1 system.

 

I know George was dreading someone quoting this, but thats good schtuff

 

yup no more "scavenging effect" and no more "vacuum" to aid in the removal of exhaust gasses.

so you use full stainless steel for your exhausts? does stainless steel require a special mandrel bender due to its more brittle state or does a mandrel bender for aluminized/mild steel suffice?

id be in for a crx setup.

 

I'm pretty sure the kit for a CRX would be very close to the Civic EF kit. All you would need to do is shorten the B pipe slightly (about 6").
