i just had some input and the guy told me to use 20w50 for the summer time cause its hot?? im here in san diego(its pretty hot) i can't find any reviews saying whether its good or not?? so should i use 20w50 for a 94 LS.... iono what hte previous owner has been putting right now i just baught some 10w30 valvoline and he told me to get some 20w50 what do you guys think?

 

I think you should stick to Honda's recommendations, and ignore any advice that "the guy" gives you.

The owner's manual and service manual recommend 5W30 (preferred viscosity at all temperatures) and 10W30 (also acceptable above 20 degrees F).

 

5w30, 10w30.. you only go higher for older engine. 10w30 is fine.. calif is not that hot

 

5w20 is honda upgrades recs... or good ole 10w30 is fine.. i would not go too such a thinner oil

Oldsters like me might be tempted to recommend 20w50 Valvoline or Castrol because, in "our day" (the first time 'round racing) that was the best weight and the best brands available.

However, we now have synthetic oils of lighter viscosity that will hold their viscosity for much longer at extremely high temperatures w/out breaking down.

In my day, in a '64 356SC running 20w50 at an airport on a hot summer day, the real life viscosity probably really was just 15w, whereas lighter oils or other brands would have just failed.

IMHO, unless there is something unusually wrong with your car, or you have 300,000 miles on it and it's burning or leaking, there's really no need to use 20w50 in your motor because modern oils will not lose viscosity the way the old timer oils would.

And you have to stop to ask yourself why Honda recommends 5w20 when the heavier oils are available.

Since the new synthetic 5w20 will maintain viability in extreme situations, if you start using 20w50 without a good reason, the thicker oil is taking a couple of HP and reducing fuel mileage for no good reason.
