Default Speedometer stopped, now check engine light?

For the past 3 days, my speedometer has been jumping all over, back to zero and up 5 mph past what im actually going, then last night, I was driving home from my gf's house(1 mile away), and the speedometer just read zero the whole way home, and the check the engine light came on.

I have the B16 swap in my 1988 crx si

I am afraid to drive it now. Is the check engine light related to the fact that the speedometer doesnt work? I need help!

Hmm I had a similar situation. My tach was jumping all around like crazy, and then I tried to match speed with a friend for a little roll off and he said I was going way too fast and my speedo must have been reading wrong.. Now it's completely not working.

No check engine light yet, but I'd assume we're having the same problem?

Yeah probably. Mine has been jumping really fast for the past couple of days. I hope someone can help me with this one.

I just took my car for a drive and got some gas and about halfway through.. Check engine light. I also noticed a lack of vtec. I'm guessing the problem for both of us is the VSS. With a bad vss you'd lose the ability to guage speed and your vtec wouldn't engage..

What is the VSS, where is it, how do I fix it, and is it bad for it to not be working? Is my car driveable?

Check your VSS and make sure your cable is in the VSS. Having no speedo will make the CEL come on. I know, cause my cable snapped and read 0kmh for 2 weeks, threw a CEL after 2-3 days.

It's part of your cluster. Your car is safely drivable, but don't expect to hit vtec or be able to tell how fast you're going..

Just tried this myself, no dice for me. Hopefully I don't need a new vss. It started to rain while I was checking it out, so I abandoned it for now. I'll check it out again in the morning.

Yeah, the blowing it out didnt work, it came right back to haunt me. So I ran down to autozone and got some of that conductor grease, applied it to the plug, and still didnt work.

What else?

More investigation... It starts working after I have been driving 15 to 20 min or more. Not sure why?

My vss cable was straight severed. Shrug, not sure how that happened, but a replacement wasn't too expensive.

So where exactly is this located? Was your mph needle the one spazing or your rpm or what? Mine is just the mph needle, its pissing me off cuz when I need vtec i dont have it.

I took a picture of what I think I need to take out... I need to know where this vss cable is.

Is this it?

hmm..yea that looks like the electronics VSS....its the same thing..its still got a mechanical speed sensor which sends an electrical signal to your tranny..instead of an actual cable which turns and is parallel in the revolution all the way to your gauge cluster-speedometer, but yea that looks like it....if its right near the the rear mount..a few inches away from the block on the tranny side..

my freaking speedo cable was making noise for the past year, and last week it finally went.

I threw a vss CEL 3 days later. It looks like its going to be a pain in the *** to replace that cable. I am not looking forward to it.

You are throwing code 17 for VSS. Since you have the JDM cluster the VSS is tranny related instead of cable to the cluster and then wired to the ECU to gauge your speed. You can remove your VSS simply and replace it. On my car (I dont know if its different because its RHD or not) but its located below the intake piping.

It looks like a little box with a gear on the end of it that goes into the tranny. Replace it and pull the hazard to reset the ECU and it should be good.

So is it not the picture I posted earlier in this thread? Where would it be in this pic, and where do I buy a new one?

Where its circled in red down below near the bottom. You need an extention to get at it and I suggest taking off the intake because it will make getting at it easier. I dont have a pic of the actual unit but there are 2 10mm bolts holding it in place one on either side.

Alright, so I take it that it is not the picture that I posted earlier in the post?

Where do I purchase a new one? Can you send me a link, what kind of car is it off of?

I didnt bother to read the whole thread because I'm in a rush, but you may need a new speedo cable. A sign of them going bad is the bouncing around the speedo. did it make a squeeking sound when its cold outside? Check your CEL at the ECU. It should have a little window on it as long as its non obd ecu. one long flash = 10 and one short = 1. two long flasshes and 1 short = 21. Good luck!
