Bump in Suspension Movement Explained and How to Set Bump in Your Shocks
this is the dampening adjustment on double adjustable shocks(height and bump adjustments)
Bump in Suspension Movement or Compression Stroke in the shock
Bump is the upward movement of the un-sprung weight on the vehicle (wheels, axles, etc.), therefore bump dampening (compression stroke) controls this movement. For instance when rolling over a “bump” the wheels, tires, suspension, and axles are all being pushed upward and the shock is being compressed. You definitely cant correctly control the downward movement of the body when driving through dips.
Bump setting will be different on every car and every driver, therefore ideal bump setting may occur at any bump setting in your shocks adjustment range, in other words there is no set starting point on any given car or driver. When side skipping or walking (basically bouncing or in extreme cases hopping of the ground) in a bumpy turn throughout any of the turn phases is reduced to almost nothing.
Here is a quick way to set proper bump for your vehicle or your driving style
1) Start with all four shocks at full soft on bump and full minimum on rebound
2) Take the car out for a spirited drive (don’t overdue it). Pay close attention to the feel and how well the care rides over bumps. Pay no attention to body roll you are only trying to set the shocks up to dampen the bumps on the road.
3) Increase bump to 1/3 (so if you have 24 clicks do this in increments of 8 clicks) of total bump adjustment on all four shocks. Take the car out again preferably on the same roads. Repeat this step until the car is too bouncy or begins to side skip over a bumpy surface.
4) when you have reached a point where the car is too bouncy reduce bump by 1/8 off the total bump adjustment ( again if you have 24 clicks reduce do this in increments of 3-4 clicks). The bump should now be close to set. Like I said earlier this setting will be different for every driver and every car
NOTE: propper bump will be reached at different settings on the front and the back so if you feel the back is bouncing and the front is not reduce bump in the rear until it is corrected before increasing the front bump
