Default cold air sucked in water from semi deep puddle, clicking in engine now

so i was driving, went through a puddle, didnt mean to. cold air intake down in front of wheel well, sucked water in through there, engine stalled. gave it a few minutes, tried cranking, VERY weak crank. after 5 or 6 tries, finally got it back on. started driving, shut off again. this happened 3 times. finally got it to stay on.

car stayed on but now there is a clicking noise present in the engine. clicking speed increases with rpm increase. talked to a few guys, one of them mentioned something about hydro lock, basically water in a cylinder not able to be compressed, fudging stuff internally. im thinking piston rod or bearing, or main crankshaft bearing. i put a stick up to cylinders to hear better, i think its coming from 3rd cylinder.

car still runs, but ive noticed a loss of power, especially taking off in 1st gear, it feels like as if im in 2nd. and then the annoying clicking. kinda sounds like way back when you ran over an aluminum can with your bike to get that cool sound, so you guys can get an idea of what it sounds like.

any thoughts on this are appreciated.

1) take plugs out
2) take fuel fuse out
3) crank car to see if water shoots out of the spark plug holes
4) change oil
5) change plugs

no really. If his motor started back up, then it doesn't mean it's hydrolocked. Just cause you suck water into your motor doesn't mean it'll be hydrolocked, you might be lucky and water is just stuck in there. Follow the steps I mentioned and see if that helps you

And you posted valid steps to take when attempting to recover a motor that has hydrolocked. Steps which he should have used before he fired up his engine like he described in his first post.

Unfortunately those steps are good for only clearing your engine of water, and are not going to fix rod knock, which is what he seems to be experiencing now.

thanks for the ideas so far. so if the first suggestion here works, then good for me, thanks a super lot.

but if its rod knock, which wont get fixed by the first suggestion... what has to be done? bearing and/or rod replacement? what kind of work is involved?

I over read the part where he mentioned that there's a clicking noise.

you most likely bent or broke a rod. I did the same thing about 4 years a go and the rod shot out the front of the block. one rod bent, one rod broke.

If it was me I'd quit driving it, tear it apart and fix it before ruining anything else.

SDQ - is your car turbocharged? that is like sucking water through a straw which is sure the getcha hydrolocked... otherwise... you might have some hot metal warped by the cool of the water...

fixing a rod isnt too hard right, i remember bein able to do it by just taking off the head and oil pan. well im about to try the first suggestion, dont think it will do anything but i got nothin to lose, ill post up what happens.

question, if it IS a bent rod, is it ok to replace just the one? or will it need a new set just for balance, etc. purposes? and doest anyone know where i can buy one of the rods? dont think my local stores carry them, ive been looking.

also, the suggestion earlier mentioned taking out the fuel fuse, i dont know if my car has a separate fuse for the fuel pump, anybody know what i can do to cut off power to it?

theres a guy on ebay who sells remanufactured stock rods, so thats prolly your best bet.

If ur stock and running stock rev limit and balancer shafts then just replace the bad ones. If youre good and you dont find metal in the oil pan, then you can do as you stated without pulling the motor.

If you have a 4th gen then you can just unplug the injector resistor box to kill the power, its next to the clutch master cylinder by the fender.
