Now I can't imagine doing so. But I bet there are people who have... they'll come out of the wood work with an anonymous vote I'm sure.

i learned in my R...well my dad was a pretty good teach..."hold the rpms at 2 and slowly let out the clutch." that helped me get used to it in about 10 min
. still stalled a couple of times after though..
and stop lights on hills were really scary..

I learned in a hatchback but the R is my first manual transmission vehicle. I'm still learning the limits of the car before I do anything to her. I guess all those years playing driving simulations in the arcades helped
Santa Monica Acura let me drive an old GSR to practice in the back. The sales peep taught me how
He drove me to a remote area, we drove a bit, the next day, I bought it and drove it/stalled it home.
-Aoib0t, who stalled a bit going home. And practiced on lil hills to simulate on ramps.

I almost put my friend through the windshield when I stepped on the clutch to
shift... ( it was the brake of course ) LOL... automatics are boring.. even tiptronic!
There was no such thing as an ITR when I learned to drive stick, but I did learn by buying a car with one. It was a 1974 Karmann Ghia. After driving it for 20 minutes I pretty much had it down.

Not exactly the first time, but I did borrow my friend's manual Accord to drive for a week before pick up. Oh, BTW, that poor thing had to change a clutch 2 months after I returned it...stall many times when lights turn green, pretty embarrasing moments, especially in the great loving metro city of NYC, you hold the traffic and you will get birdies from all over the directions.

Unfortunately, don't own an R, but I taught myself how to try manual on my 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano. I live in a very quiet area, so I'd wake up early before school each morning and practice. Now both of my cars are manuals: 1987 Accord LXi and 2000 Civic Si.
That's why you Americans misshift a lot!!!
You should learn to drive stick during the first driving lessons!!
BTW. Only 5% or less of the cars here are automatic. And if pass your licence exam in an automatic you'll get an aut. only licence!!!
