The Air conditioning on my 03 civic lx just stopped working yesterday. What should I do? Will autozone free code reding catch what the problem is?

Well, yeah it will, but only if youre getting a check engine light.
What is it actually doing?
1. blowing hot air,
2. Blowing cold intermitently.
3. Not blowing at all.
4. only cold when moving.

Just blowing outside air temperature, no the check engine light is not on, and when I turn on the defroster the air conditoiner doesn't turn on automaticaly. Should I just take it into the shop?
when you turn the A/c on, does the compressor clutch 'click' into engagement?
If not, then there could be a couple reasons. Such as the 'pressure cycling switch' on the back of the compressor.
If it does, check the cleanliness on the condensor on the front of the car, in front of the radiator.
But yeah, going to AutoFraud, (autozone) wont do you any good since youre not getting a CEL.
If its still under warranty, take it to honda. If its not, find a reputable shop around you and have them work on it. You can do some simple stuff to the A/C system yourself, but when you get into stuff where you have to open the system for any reason, its best to take it somewhere.

There's a nice tutorial I found on how to switch Auto A/C on and off. The design of having the A/C turn on whenever you used a Defroster, was meant for states that had higher occurances of colder weather, since the A/C lines need to be flushed in order to keep the freon from losing it's strength.
As for the lack of cold air being blown, if you can hear the A/C compressor (should kick in periodically to keep the lines cold enough when you have the A/C on) running, then it might just be that your system needs a re-charge. Take it to a shop that deals with A/C units on Honda's for a better inspection.
