Default Need help with my welding.

I know I need more practice but I am having a problem. When you flux weld should there be little tiny peaces of metal all over the place? I also am having problems getting holes when I weld pipes. I have 4 heat settings. I put it on the 1 and I think I am not getting good penetration, so I put it on the 2 and I get a hole very easy. I have gotten holes on 1 setting to so I am thinking that maybe I am to close or moving to slow. If I move to fast I can't get a good bead and it looks like ****. I am getting that poping thing and that is when I tured up the heat and then that seems to hot and I gat a hole.

Now is there such a thing as being to close? If so, how far away should I be?
This is what I am welding

Not sure what gauge metal this is (.065)

Any help would be great, I am tiered of grinding it down to make it look good.

What do you mean by metal all over the place ?

Also keep the heat on 1 but go slower if you think you are not burning through enough, remember that you really have 3 settings, heat on the machine, wire speed on a machine, and the speed of you moving.

Also when flux welding you want to be about a time or so away from the piece, hard to explain over the net, and you want to have a little wire sticking from the tip.

Yeah that's it spatter.

See I burned a hole even on the one setting. I was told when you weld you need to do it in a half moon kinda thing, so that is what I was trying to do but then I burn a hole in it and have to weld a big glob to cover it. I guess I just need more practice.

Do you guys use any gel type stuff to stick the tip in?

Try zigzag motion, half moon might be slowing you down causing you to burn through.

I was also thinking, do I need to be holding the trigger down when welding or just hitting it long enough to make like a tack weld and just keep staking it?

That is not good because you are letting the puddle cool down, and move faster.

Yeah, any pattern you do is just to slow down the welding process to allow the wire to speed up and form the right shap. You can go in a straight line if the heat and wire speed is correct.

realy, I'll have to try that. I think I may need to try and step up to gas and see if I like it that way.

it comes like that or in a spray, we use the spray where i work its called skat spat you just spray on and around the area to be welded and most of the spatter can just be wiped away. i learnede on a lincoln weldpack 100hd no gas flux core and belive me i know exactly what you are talking about try running faster in the half moon or u seems to work good on the flux core machines

Cool man thanks, now do you want to spray in on the spot you are welding or just around?

i spray the gun nozzle the area to be welded and about a foot around the area, the heat will evaporate the spray on the spot you are welding but not around the area. it wont remove all the spatter but at least 80 % of it. good luck
