Default JDM b16a / SMOG question.

Alright, heres what the Ref told me for b16a.

1) You can use the short block of a jdm motor, you have to use a US head.

my question: what's the difference and how could they tell the difference?

2) You have to use a USDM ECU with factory wire hareness, needs to be taken to a dealership to have them verify it's US and they need to give you an invoice to show to the REF.

3) It needs to pass tail pipe and he noted some JDM engines are a little higher in compression compared to their USDM couterparts. So it 'may' effect the results.

--Are b16a's any higher than their US couterparts?

Thanks.

if you're talkin about compression which i assume you are a jdm 2nd gen b16a has 10.4 compression ratio a usdm or 1st gen b16a or b16a1 or b16a2 has 10.2 compression ratio

Just make sure your actual ECU has the sticker with the part number in plain view. The ref will fail you if they do not see this.

3) It needs to pass tail pipe and he noted some JDM engines are a little higher in compression compared to their USDM couterparts. So it 'may' effect the results.

</TD></TR></TABLE>

The Ref is only giving you half information.

1) Not True, you can pass with a full JDM engine. The only difference between JDM and USDM motors (besides for compression ratio) is the JDM engines are missing the Evaporative Purge Control Solenoid Valve on the intake manifold. However, the problem is JDM b16 intake manifolds do not have a hole drilled for it. So your option there is to a) drill a hole for it (pm me if you want instructions on how to turn a jdm b16 intake manifold into usdm spec) or b) buy a usdm b16 intake manifold.

If the ref still fails you for this, take it to another ref.

2) True, the ecu must be USDM. Not True, you don't have to take it to the dealership to "certify" it. I did this once and the people at the parts counter gave me a look of confusion. Maybe what you could do is have the dealership print you out a diagram of the ecu with the part number so you can compare the number on your actual ecu and the part number on the invoice.

3) True, compression is a little higher on JDM engines. Just make sure you timing is set to factory spec (16 +/- 2* btdc), get an oil change, change spark plugs, etc. It also helps to run your motor HARD an hour before the test to get the cat. converter hot.

yes, sorry i forgot to say it's a 99 si b16a going into my 96 dx hatch. Can i use the harness that came with the japanese ecu or do i need to change that for the US?

wheres the best place to pick up an ecu? And so theoretcially i can just put on a US intake manifold and they can't tell the difference? What about aftermarket carb legal one?

thanks!

You would need the obd2 harness. The main difference between the usdm and jdm harness is that the jdm is geared towards RHD cars so most of the connectors might come up short when you try to plug them in on the left side.

Also, i could just stick a 99 si stock intake manifold on from a US right. Or couldn't i just use a carb legal intake manifold? refs picky about factory parts?

Ok, i think i got it.

So lets double check this list i need:

1)USDM si 99-00 ECU with wire harness.
2)USDM si 99-00 OBD-II Intake Manifold (skunk2 carb legal) and the EGR solenoid.
3)USDM si 99-00 Oil Pump (to hook up CKP sensor)

And if the part store asks, these parts come off the US B16A1, right?

Which version of ECU am i looking for?

so if i get a 99 ecu for my 99 b16, whats a "jumper" for? Is it because I have a 96 body? And where can I find this jumper, or whats the technical name for it so I can at least google for it? Thanks.

well thing is, is that i don't have a USDM harness yet. i'm using the JDM ECU/harness atm. I'm still learning what i have to do before i start spending money. so the 96-98 is a and 98-00 is b. So i need a jumper so that when i buy a 99-00 USDM harness and 99 US ecu i can use it with my obd2a 96 hatch. Its all clear now. Thanks guys.
