Default '96 Speedometer went out...any help?

Has anyone had any issues with their speedometer going out on a '96? I woke up this morning and it's stuck at zero. It rained like mad all yesterday, but that's the only thing I can think of that could have effed it up. Tach and other gauges still seem to work.

Any help is much appreciated.

So the odometer and the trip odometer are also out. Does the speedometer and odometer both get their data from the speed sensor?

Yup. You most likely need a new VSS if you didn't tamper with any of the wiring recently

any idea whether or not you need to drop the tranny out to get that thing out?

All you gotta do is unplug the plug at top, take out the 1 10mm bolt thats holding it onto the tranny, pull it out, and then reverse.

sorry to be a pain (completely retarded with anything but audio), but is this accessible without jacking it up? I'm wondering if I can order the part and do it in my driveway with only basic tools and no jackstands.

No jacks required. Its very easy. Only tool you need is any 10mm wrench (socket or open-end whichever is easier from where you standing from)

Here's a pic of where its located in case you don't know

Just unthread that one 10mm thats not on the black piece

Any chance this could be a fuse? If so, which?

Someone here at work said a fuse went out in their Accord and it blew out the speedometer.

It could be a fuse. There is one under the dash, 7.5 amp I think. I cant remember which one off the top of my head. I'll check when I get home from work, but I blew that fuse and my speedo stopped working.

That would be a huge help. I'd hate to spend the cash I don't have on a new part I don't need. I checked under the dash and there was a fuse labeled "meter", which is the only one that made real sense to me. Visually, it looked alright. I wonder if that's the one?

It has to be electrical, right? It rained like crazy here in Maryland overnight and it wasn't working when I fired up the car. It was working fine when I parked it last night.

The speedo assembly as in the one in the dash?

Did the odometer and trip odometer also go out?

If you're right, i'm sending you a care package. If you don't like kids, just kick lock it out of the house. It can find it's way back.

if the CEL comes on then it could be the engine wiring harness at the intake manifold brace, they aparently tend to rub through there and cause a short with the speedo/cel/brakelights

Make sure its not the plug. Happened to me it ended being the plug after i had spent 150 bucks on a VSS.

That's not necessarly true. My speedo works intermitently on my 96LX and I've replaced the VSS with no luck. If the VSS is sending no signal you'll get a check engine light. If you have no check engine light its more than likely the speedometer itself.

Another easy way to check is just turn on your cruise control. The VSS sends the signal to the cruise to maintain the speed. If its really your VSS and not the speedometer itself, you won't be able to use cruise.

Well, the dealership is going to be figuring this one out. On the way in to work all my lights and dash lights started pulsating, so I finally sucked it up and took it in for the 100K or whatever mile service.

The dealership said it's the VSS and were going to charge 300 bucks for parts and labor. Not going to have them do that, but they are taking care of that "warranty extension" stuff, which should be sweet.

Anyone have the link to the list of stuff that gets replaced under that semi-recent Civic emissions warranty extension? I remember a thread here about it way back when.
