I doubt that thumpimg noise has anything to do with the intake.

yeah me and my friends running intake pipes with only a airhorn attached on the daily...dont worry about it....just make sure you dont have any wires or sensors hanging in front of the throttle body....it can be dangerous cause you might get stuck at wide open throttle...

It's usually NOT okay..

You want to run an intake because of the filter, w/o it you can suck stuff into the engine... If a piece large enough goes into the TB it can 'cause major havoc

Word. For a temporary test, throw the filter on the throttle body for "better-safe-than-sorry" reasons.

At least put a piece of panty hose or screen WITH a hose clamp holding it on.

Why do I have this idea that a sock would get sucked into the TB ?

That's not a good idea either without a hose clamp or something to hold it. I've seen a makeshift filter like that get sucked into the throttle body, sticking it wide open.

if your gonna waste your time putting anything back on just to go down the street, might as well put on the intake.

I wouldn't recommend it but unknowingly, I have actually driven my car without the filter on my intake for about 45 miles.

My car was stolen, recovered, so I picked it up at a junkyard and drove it home. I started looking over it and realized they stole the air filter off along with a bunch of other stuff.

But I consider myself lucky nothing got sucked up to hurt the engine.
