Default Late model Honda head unit in 93 civic?

I need a cd player that isnt going to get stolen for my beater. I would like to buy a stock honda unit off ebay for cheap. Will I be able to just drop in a cd player from a later model civic or were there changes after 95?

I just looked up a 99-00 Civic CD player on ebay. It had pictures of the back of the unit, and a plug from a 92-98 Civic will NOT fit.

I do know there were optional CD tuners for 92-95 Civics though.

*edit*
You can still wire a 99-00 Civic stereo to a 92-95 Civic harness. Let me know if you need info on this, and I'll post back.

I assume that if I get the harness with the radio I should just be able to cut off my harness and wire in the new one? Not the best solution but would work fine.

is this refering to switching the harness as mentioned or is there a better way?

Thanks, Jeff

You can put a newer radio in your '93 quite easily. You'll need a reverse harness for the new radio, Metra part number 71-1721 and a regular harness for your car, part number 70-1720. Wire them together, plug them in, and you're done.

Mounting that new radio, however, may be more difficult.

The tricky part is if you get a newer OEM Civic deck, chances are it may not come with any wiring. If you don't want to cut your stock wiring, get a wiring harness adapter as B18C_EJ8 mentioned, then get a stock wiring from a 99-00 Civic (finding that piece of wiring is the tricky part, you may need to scour a junk yard or the For Sale section). Your stock wiring (male end plug) will plug into the aftermarket wiring harness adapter (female end plug with loose wires). The loose wires from the aftermarket harness will then be spliced to the newer stock wiring, and the male plug end from the newer stock wiring will plug into the newer OEM deck. Below is a link indicating which color wire is what.

A newer OEM Civic deck will slide right into the DIN slot. You can leave it as is, however it can easily be pulled out and stolen. Securing the deck to the frame is the difficult part.

The only thing I can think of is using a bendable metal strap or 2 (like the ones that come with aftermarket stereos, they're the metal strips with holes in them) and attach the straps to the back of the deck, using any one of those screws shown in the picture. Then you can wrap the straps around the frame and ziptie the ends of the strap together. That way the deck can't be pulled out.
