Joey Hand crash at Mid Ohio

yea, i saw the car being carried through the paddock today.... WOW! that's all I could say! that car was GONE... everything OUTSIDE of the cage. cage didn't look like it was tweaked at all!
don't cheap out on your rollcage!

From the email I got from a local SCCA member...they explained it like this: In the process of adding a cross-over near the start stand, Mid-Ohio apparently piled-up the dirt into a 1' berm that runs perpindecular to the racing surface.
Why would they do that?

He's okay. A little bruised up, but nothing broken. He's one tough cookie. We were neighbors (he lived behind me) when we were kids growing up. If I know, him, he'll be back in a car soon.

i looked at the car up close on sunday, and wow that was the most torn up i have ever seen a car. But as some one else said, the cage was 100%.
Untill after sundays race when i saw the kensai racing RSX, and the 3 rivers civic SI, and the fenton motorsports rsx. the kensai racing rsx looked like the m3 but the cage seemed to have some deflection.

Why wouldn't Paul Edwards back off? Seemed pretty avoidable.

That's where he wound up, but that's not where it happened.
(Before I continue, anyone who has not driven Mid-Ohio this year, refer to the track map here, to see where they added two new roadways so that they can run two separate courses simultaneously, one with the keyhole and the other with most of the rest of the track. The two new roadways run between the section of the track between turn 1 and the keyhole, and the section of the back straight before the kink.)
It started right after the exit of the keyhole, at the start of the back straight. In the video, you can see that he flipped because he was riding on the grass to the right of the track, and crossed the first of these new roadways. After his first flip, he crosses the second new roadway. The rest of the flips carry him to the kink, and he comes to rest on the outside of the kink.
There is no "bump" on the track itself; in fact, with the repaving this year, they have actually smoothed out some of the more abrupt elevation changes on the track. The problem is that he was riding on the grass, and of course the transitions between grass and pavement can be abrupt, particularly where the direction of travel is across new the pavement rather than in the same direction.

From viewing the accident, you'd have to drive on the grass to find it.
Very glad Joey Hand is alright.

The bottom line is that it would be very easy to find yourself where he did while racing. They should correct it.
Jason-
who raced on the new surface in April, but honestly didn't feel that Mid-O was all it's cracked up to be.

The same thing could happen at any track where there are multiple configurations. They could (and should, and probably do) grade it so that the pavement is level with the surrounding turf, but after the track gets used for a while, the turf gets worn down alongside the track. < shrug >

I'm not sure why you say that, but to each his own. I love it for its "rhythm", i.e. its sequences of turns, among other features. I've driven on 25 different tracks all over the country, including virtually all of the biggest name tracks, and Mid-Ohio (which is still the same basic track after the repaving as it was before) is still my number one favorite of all of them (with VIR and Road Atlanta second and third). Which is why I've gone back there to drive every year for the past, oh, 18 years or so.

It's not the track per se, but rather the lack of facilities. I actually like the track layout, but for someone that likes to spend his entire weekends at the track, it leaves much to be desired. (No power hookups, decent showering/restroom facilities, etc.) I had expected more from such a well-known location, but I'll admit that I am indeed spoiled with VIR being so close. With that said, Mid-Ohio would probably be third on my list of tracks that I've raced at, behind VIR and Summit Point. Yes, I think Summit is more challenging.
Like you said, to each his own. Whenever I make it down to Road Atlanta, I'll probably like it more than VIR. Who knows...
Jason-
who's still very much looking forward to the NASA Nationals, even though he wishes they were in Alton, VA

Huh? As long as you rent a garage, you get power, compressed air, and internet service. And the restrooms are real restrooms, not portapotties. No showers, but hey, you can always shower when you get back to the hotel.
Mid-Ohio has other features in addition to the track layout. The snack bar is decent, if somewhat overpriced. The grounds are immaculate, looks like a country club. There are plenty of reasonably priced hotels in the area, and plenty of restaurants too (unlike VIR, where there is apparently only one steakhouse in all of Danville, and if you have a good-sized group, you can plan on waiting for well over an hour on a Saturday night, as I found out the hard way.
to Danville.) And if Mansfield doesn't have enough for you, you're less than an hour from Cleveland and Columbus, not stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

Do me a favor. Paypal me the $1,000 garage fee so I can have power in September, okay?
To dispell the inaccuracies for others:
1. VIR has 2 sets of individual showers. Mid-Ohio has one common shower with ~12 heads.
2. VIR has 3 sets of "real restrooms", in addition to those at the south paddock. There are also port-a-potties in the paddock, so you were partly correct, except for your absolute description.
3. Power is available everywhere in the paddock, much to the delight of people racing/learning/instructing on a budget that can't afford a hotel.
4. Beautiful landscape? Have you been to Virginia?
5. There are indeed plenty of restaurants in the Danville area.
You started it, but now I'm done. I don't like misinformation being thrown around, especially about a track as great as VIR. Again, I like the Mid-O layout, but they really should think about improving their facilities for EVERYONE, not just people that can afford a garage.
To the original poster and everyone else, I apologize for going off on a tangent. This is my last post on the thread, I promise. I just HATE misinformation, that's all
Again, glad Joey was okay.
