saturday afternoon cruise pictures (cali coast)
decided to drop the top yesterday and put a few hundred miles on the miata via my favorite highway in the world. hwy 1. numero uno for a reason!
this highway almost took my life earlier this year when i drove it all the way down the coast to LA and some late winter storms engulfed the entire california coast line. major rock slides with no help for many miles = all bad. conditions were much better yesterday
pictures taken with my cheapo 3mp kodak easyshare & a TRIPOD. enjoy

lol i almost don't want to say but...
its called china beach, its all the way in the back end of the point lobos state reserve park. just a couple miles south of carmel i believe. 9$ per car entry fee.
probably my favorite beach in california, its totally protected by the cove = no wind.

yeah its a great way to make the drive, although it will take much longer than the highway 5 express. lots of hairpin turns, making the miata the best option for quick highway 1 traveling.
whenever im driving that section of the coast, i meet the coolest like minded adventurous people.
when i was heading down to LA earlier this year during the rock slides, a car full of hot girls drove passed when i popped the hood of the miata on the side of the road to check for a noise. 30 seconds later they turned around and came back just to stop and check that i was ok, cool girls.
on yesterdays trip i locked my keys in the car at point lobos. some guy came along, went and got a bungee cord from his trunk and a stick, and retrieved my keys off of the seat as i pulled the window back an inch or so to work.
name was mike, said his friends call him "mike-gyver"
coincidentally, mcgyver was my idle growing up.
cool people drive highway 1

you have to remember, cali is like an entire country, with more climates and environments to offer than most actual countries.
the only thing is, you just have to do a whole lot of driving to eventually make your way out of the never ending metropolis, found in northern or southern cali.
if you like the big sur coast you'd also love the coast farther north, where i've hiked in temperate rain forests, and mingled with elk on the beach.
or mt lassen volcanic national park up north is also pretty awesome. bubbling mud pots and all that cool stuff.
la porte, a little town deep into the sierras just east of marrysville and such, is an awesome protected little place. during the winter they get some of the most concentrated snow fall in the sierras, so it stays pretty low key up there. big *** reservoir to go swimming, rivers and creeks galore, etc.
just northeast of los angeles you can find kings canyon national park. quite a nice chunk of wilderness with one of the deepest canyons in the country. while camping there years ago, out on tarps without a tent on our way to san diego, we woke up at night as bears were breaking into and destroying someones car just a few campsites away
stupid noobs leaving food in the car, thats what the big steel box's at each campsite are for
mammoth also north east of LA is pretty spectacular...
