Default Broken shift fork?

I picked up this transmission today for like $25. First off, is there any way to tell if he's telling the truth? (He told me it was an Si) It went into all but first gear, but when put into gear it would lock up.

Anyways, I have a feeling its has a broken shift fork after some exploritory surgery. Check it:

This is the **** that came out ^

This is where it came from. ^

None of the other shift linkages are broken, I think it was just something underneath. I cant find the source of the snapped metal pieces. Anybody ever replaced them? If so, how much? It shouldnt be hard from what I've read.

yeah, i think that's part of your shift fork, i think you can pick the part up on majestic honda for a decent price- better than dealer prices atleast, take a picture of where it broke off, i might have that part on a spare transmission, what kind of trans is it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

open the tranny up (see steps 1-6 under How to remove the transmission housing in the first post here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=596873 )
now count the teeth on this diff ring gear. then count the teeth on the small pinion gear that meshes with it. divide big number by small number. If it's 4.25, you've got an Si (or built-to-si-specs) CRX tranny.

If it's 3.88 (DX), you got taken.

this is what i did to make sure my transmission i bought off of ebay was an SI transmission. since you already have it open, it will be easy.

Well, I THINK its a Si. I need to go buy a 8mm hex socket to get that damn bolt off to verify, though.

Thanks for the info man, I'm gonna check that out.

Clean that up a little bit before you put it back togeather and put some fluid in it that's worth paying for. (I do realize that you werent' running it)

Its a 8mm hex in the clutch housing. All I have is one of those hex sets where they fold out, I cant get a good enough grip on it.

Now, do I take the parts from this one and make a ZC\Si hybrid or just get this one back on the road and hope the **** isnt too screwed up (I.E. Syncros and bearings)

I was hoping i could convice you other wise, i just swapped out my si transmission for a hybrid tranny, it has the ZC gears 1-4, HF-5 and EX final drive, have it all put back together but i have to wait for the auto parts store to open up on monday because they gave me the wrong part.. I'd say just take it apart and check it out, there's a site that sells syncros for our cars, prety cheap and prety cool, they are carbon coated http://www.gearspeedinc.com/products.htm click on products and then they should be half way down

Thanks for the tip man. So you wanted to convince me to go ZC 1-4?

About that, where did you get your trans? I can get it from Hmotors for $250, but if I could get it cheaper I'd love to. And the HF 5th?

And, why did you use a EX final drive? I've been told the Si is the shortest.

I bought it from tyson here on honda-tech, he bought it from someone off of a differnt forum a few years back, here's the link http://www.norcalcrx.org/forum...light
the ex final drive is actually a little bit shorter than the si. plus it's going to be nice because it uses an intermediate shaft, which will eliminate torq steer. The HF 5th gear will allow for better gas mileage on the interstate, right now at 80mph im at 3900 RPM and i figured using the ratios of the final drive and the Hf 5th gear I would be at about 2800 or around that, I can't remember. Plus it will be nice becuase I won't have to listen to the engine droneing sound on long road trips.

here's a shot of the tranny I just installed, the next two pictures, the first one will be the stock Si 4th and 5th gear, and the second one will be the 4th and 5th gears from the new one- with the HF 5th you can really see the difference.

STOCK SI 4th and 5th

So I take it thats the transmission you bought, complete? Yeah, I wanted the Si case because I just bought new axles.

And for your calculating pleasure, this link is very helpful: http://crx.honda-perf.org/math/index.html . You should be at 3487 RPM at 80 with the HF 5th and Si (didnt have EX) final drive.

Actually, your setup is exactly what I wanted, except to use a Si or DX case (depending on bearing size). If you have any info on where to get a HF 5th set I'd be greatful.

yeah i bought it complete as is, I was going to build it myself but for what I wanted I got a better deal on this one. I had ordered the HF 5th from majestic honda, you can order it online but I cancled the order once i found this one. You'll need both main shaft and counter shaft.

Main and counter HF 5th gears, right? When I first read it I thought you might mean the actual shafts haha.

No it isn't - it's longer.

The Si has a 4.25-1 final drive. The diff. bearings are bigger too.

4.06 is what i meant, so i guess the smaller ratio makes it longer, my bad

Actually I have a lead on a whole HF transmission for $30 or so dollars. SiRay, thats a great website, thanks. But theres no address to contact them at.

Anybody know if I can use the ZC or HF shift linkage? I dont want to go buy another one if I'll already have a scrap one.

And SiRay, let me know how you like the transmission when you get it in, and how it compares to what you have now.

yeah i should know tomorrow, just waiting for NAPA to open, need a new half shaft, I went to the crx math page and that doesn't allow you to change too much, try this one if you want to play around with the gears, just need to know all the ratios, and you can compare the stock transmission next to it, http://forums.clubsi.com/showf...50299
i typed in all the ratios and with the hf 5th at 80 it was 3230rpm

I meant if you had a source of transmission parts. Not the whole transmission.

Yeah, that was a stupid question, sorry.

Anyways, I found my culprit.

I may have screwed up already - the top gear on the mainshaft poped off while I took it off, and I cant remember which way is right... oops.

EDIT - I confirmed its an Si trans. 68 on the diff and 16 on the countershaft.
