Default Broken axle stuck in tranny (pics attached)

I broke my passenger side axle at the track yesterday. It is an aftermarket axle (therefore is very very difficult to drill). I have a Quaife lsd so my main attempts have been trying to hammer it out from the drivers side. I think the problem is the snap ring on the inside preventing it from coming out.

Please offer any advice you can.

The first pic looks like the axle splines don't line up with the diff splines anymore....or is that just me??

I think you have the right idea trying to push it out from the opposite side? How could you possibly break it like that at a track I wonder?

u have a quiafe whichmakes your life 100x simpler. just stick a long skiny object in and give it a good whack with a hammer it will pop out.

And bingo was his name o.

I would also spray a little bit of wd-40 on the broken shaft.

I did both...sprayed wd40 on both sides, and beat the living **** out a rod that I slid into the hole. It will not move at all. If i drill a hole in it could that be any help? How can the c clip be dislodged?

the only way to dislodge the c clip is to push it out of the groove its in, aka slam that thing

use a center punch, something that will evenly distribute force, any old rod may be directing the force into the splines at an angle instead of straight out

It looks like there is damage to the spring washer inside the diff. What size rod are you using to drive out the axle? Get a 3/8" drift punch and work on the axle directly through the hole (labeled 1 in red).

I tried drilling it (which failed). So I ended up pulling the tranny and diff out of the car....but i still can't get it out. Should I use a press and press an object through the small hole (shown in red)?

Yes press that bitch out. A press is so non-violent so you wont have to worry about surrounding parts.

The spring washer and everything in that side of the diff (drivers side) is perfect - nothing is damaged.

Now that it is out, disassemble the quaife and see why it is stuck. Disassembly will allow for you to press on the full face of the axle shaft.

How do i go about disassembling the Quaife?
What are all the torque specs for reassembly?
Can't i just press it out by resting it on the outside gear or something like that?

i think quaife's just hold on to the axle more than a stock diff, i wouldn't disassemble it.

wow if its that stuck, then i really doubt its the c clip holding it in. maybe you somehow messed up the splines on the quaife and the axle?

i dont konw if i would take it apart myself, might void the warranty? i guess since you have the diff out it wouldnt hurt to try and throw it on a press and see if she will give.

i would send it back to quaife tell them to get it out and inspect it for damage or just give me another.
like eddiebx said i doubt that the c clip is holding it in.
somthing else is holding it in
hope that helps

you'd be surprised, I chipped a crow bar trying to get an axle out. once it was out everything looked fine.

i have never realy had that much trouble taking out axles before. and i have done quite a few in my day between swaps, changing the clutch, and just haveing to raplace the axles.
the tranny side is a little hard sometimes but i just get a big *** flat head screwdriver and hit the handle with my hand, then turn the axle a little then hit it again. after about 4 times of doing that she pops out.

What type of axle was this? I would give Quaife a call up tomorrow and further discuss this with them. They may have some good info on how to get it out other than the obvious press idea.

try pushing it further in first, then hitting it back the other way, that should loosen it up soon....

DO NOT disassemble the Quaife! When I talked to Quaife America a couple years ago they told me that the only thing that really voided the warranty was disassembly. You can blow it up racing but couldn't take it apart. I don't really know why.

I can vouch for that little C-clip's durability. Send the LSD back to Quaife and let them figure it out.
