Default Give up on the CRX?

Well, Its been a not too long road, but the worst run ins of BS ever :/

The only reason I picked up the CRX is because I drove down to the tenessee border in VA to pick up a EG hatch only to have the ******* sell the car that morning, even though he was going to 'hold' it for me, and told me it was still avail. before I left that morning. Was around 16 hours of driving...

That was this christmas eve.

Then the day after christmas I found a CRX with the jdm front end. I thought it was going to be a 3 hour drive. 6 hours later we make it to pittsburg, its snowing, I forgot my coat (im a idiot!) and the thing was sitting so long the brakes were locked, we couldnt push it up on the trailer. So I had to go and get a winch. I get home like 4 am that night after traveling in snow on the pa turnpike..

A few weeks later I decide to work on it. I hook up a battery and start testing things. No power anywhere, I check everything out the whole main dash harness is all cut up, half *** spliced and wires missing everywhere.
Windshield randomly develops a crack.

a month or two later I find a CRX with full interior, and wings west body kit, suspension, exhaust etc. no motor. I buy it and figure I'll strip the other one, and use this one and sell the wings west kit.

Last week I really got to work on it. Did a wire tuck safely, installed my alarm, remote locks, remote start, pulled my b16 out of my daily driver hatchback and threw it on the crx, started trying to get paint off random interior pieces blah blah.
Test drive it one night the threads rip off the drivers side ball joint, left side falls to ground, bends fender in two places, but not too bad. Rips CV boot on brand new axle in half and pulls it out of tranny. Fixed it right after it happened and got the car home about alittle more then a hour later.
Disassamble/Reassamble a few axles to make one good one that will pass inspection (I have 3 weeks left and nothing but problems happening when I should be done).
Goto work yesterday, battery dies, I'm stuck on side of road. I guess the alternator randomly went out. Get to work late blah.

Get ready to goto work this morning, driving down I95. Hood randomly unlatches and smashes a brand new looking windshield. DESTROYS my perfect condition JDM hood, and my windshield is of course toast.

I just don't know what to do :/
Does anyone else have just **** luck like this? I know theres a bunch more crap thats happened randomly that I'm probally not remembering because I'm too pissed off.

Now I was almost ready for inspection. Just needed to get a climate control unit, and re-install my interior and clean up alittle wiring from when I was troubleshooting some stuff.
Now I get quoted around $250 for a windshielf, and I would have to buy a new hood, if I go JDM OEM I'm looking at what, like $200 without shipping, and with passwords shipping, I guess like $400. Or $650 for a carbon fiber one to fit my jdm front end.

Is it really worth it?
I have a the whatever green color, silver back bumper, white front, black left fender, silver pass fender, 2 barbados yellow or whatever doors, HAD a black hood. I get to drive around looking like a clown until I get the car going safely, and now I have to spend almost what it was gona cost to get the car painted.

I'm thinking of finding myself a EG in decent condition, and parting out the crx, parting out the ef hatch (whats left), selling the b16, selling my ls motor and everything and just doing the same thing my bro is doing and go d series turbo.

I'm sure theres been far worse. People building thier cars and some ******* randomly hitting them and totalling it on thier first test drive.

What do you all think?

damn that sucks bro, but if you give up now all that time(not to mention money) will be for nothing. I think we have all felt the way, at one point or another, you are feeling right now but your best bet is to just stick with it and don't look at the negative stuff. Try to enjoy your crx and always think of what its going to be like when youre done. I myself have a Y-49 CRX, the supposed cursed one, and have been dumping money since i got it a year ago. Crazy random problems have came up with my car! It has been hard but thru it all im glad i've done it. It's easy to just go buy a new shell/car and "finish it" but it feels good when you know how a car was when you started and then looking at it now.

all in all do what you feel is best, but if it was me id keep at it!

good luck

Jose

Yea I think I will think about it over the weekend.

If I get a diff gen honda, then I will have to start completely over.

The thing that really pisses me off is its alot of money just to fix something as stupid as a hood comming unlatching. I guess I can be glad it was a saturday morning heading towards baltimore, and not a weekday with the normal morning rush :/

I have the cash to fix it right now, but it just puts me in a bad situation heh, my family is all moving and if I don't then I gota get a place, which means its going to make it much harder to make repairs etc. on the crx down the road :x.

I forgot the other bad thing that happened is somehow a pin on the ecu that came with my b16 got bent, probally from a tool hitting it while we were doing the whole swap and all, and when I went to plug the harness in it, broke the pin. So now I am running off some ZC ecu I found in one of the crx's lol :c

heres a few pics of what I got, I havent took any since it fit the front end and everything yet :/

I have rims sitting if I ever get to the point to paint if I plan on it, I went through my room (I store car parts everywhere ) and found my closet was full of more then enough crx interior parts to restore the interior almost to mint. I found the rest of my door moldings and all, and was going to take all that stuff off and clean it up, repair gouges and scratches in the plastic and test out how well that 'trim' paint works that I've read about

man that is quite a disaster story. and quite a disaster of a look for a car, but hang in there man, nice rexes are rare, and you are on your way to having one cool car.
keep it up man. dont give it up.

It just depends on if you have time & money to get it right.
I drove a car that was 2-4 tones for nearly 4 years. Now it was only black & blue, but still I feel your pain on it all.
A wise grandmother has been harping at me saying Don't put good money into a bad car.
Needless to say I sold my 1st car for this crx.
This second time around, my theme with this one is...if it ain't broke don't fix it... b/c when you fool with a car, you will have random weird problems.
So I'm satisfied with a near stock d16 and it's even burning some oil.
I like to drive my car, not work on it all the time.

But you got a good story with that car.
Most people don't fit their jdm hoods correct causing the hood to fly up later on..... it happened to me (or i left the hood popped)

Anyway, think it out.

Yeah I'm not sure what the heck happened. I don't want to even go out and try to figure it out :/

I cleaned the latch assy. with my parts cleaner at work because it seemed like it was sticking from gunk and all but for some reason I think its the cable. I noticed the end of the cable where it connects to the latch was comming loose for the hard plastic protective layer.

If I decide to fix it everything will be replaced except the hood latch inside the car, and I will probally have a CF hood so I will also have hood pins :/

The thing that sucks is I was allready pricing all of that crap last night because I kept thinking about the whole hood latch acting up in the back of my mind. I just never thought anything bad of it.

But yeah, I have the money for the time being. I know how to paint, but I have only sprayed industrial paint on the trucks we fabricate at work. I work with hydraulic truck mounted cranes. I would paint it myself but I was told its a whole different story spraying most car paints, especially if its a metallic, which I can't tell if my color is or not.

But I would really like to keep the car, I suppose I should really look over it and see what all I need to repair, and what all I need, and the time and money it will take to do it.

Theres your problem, get rid of that damn yellow door! Its cursed! (Y-49) LOL

Nah but really man... I was kinda in the same boat with how I ended up with my CRX... I really wanted an EG... But as things turned out, I settled and bought my CRX from my brother... I figured Id turn around and sell it in a few years and get what I wanted... Well now that Ive been working on it, I just love it too damn much... I still want an EG hatch, but no way Id sell the CRX...

As for all your problems... I dunno man, I say dont give up... Just keep at it... When you pick up someone elses left over unfinished project, theres always kinks and things to work out... And then ofcourse your own problems on top of those kinks... These are older cars, so stuff is gonna brake... Everytime I think about selling my CRX the main thing that makes me keep it is, how rare are clean CRXs vs clean EGs? I see nice EGs all the time, but the CRX is a rare car to have, and just gets rarer with age, kinda like a fine wine...

Man of course it's worth it. If you had a stock rusting DX I might tell you to give up but it sounds like your car has some heart into it and I wouldn't give up on that. I've given up on two CRX's in the past (one had a blown motor and holes rusting in it, the other had a bent frame and a cursed history of bad owners and accidents) my current CRX has had just as bad a time as your car sounds like and I'm sticking with it, sometimes you just have to slow your progress..

Here's what you do about inspection, first you don't really have to have a straight body to pass any inspection, so why not just throw on a USDM hood? You can pick one up for free or near free plenty of places, make sure it just stays latched and if the cop says anything say its out of alignment or something. Not a big deal.

Next, most states say if the size of a crack in a window is larger than a dollar bill, I'm assuming a hood smashing into it caused more damage than that so you're going to want to get that one replaced. Google about ten numbers and start bargaining with them saying that the other is offering one for this much and go down $10 each time. I got Professional Auto Glass in Seattle to do mine with tinted strip for $150 installed.

For the mechanical issues.. Alternator, junkyard, battery walmart. That's another $100 or so.

This isn't going to solve all your problems but it solves them all for now. I bet you could solve your issues with about $300

I'd stick with the car. You know something else, all this crap the car is giving you, it just gives the car personality. So roll with the punches, and punch back! lol j/k about punching it back though.

yea been thinking bout it and I will probally stick with it but buy a cheap eg or something with a blown motor and rebuild one of our many d series laying around and use the eg as a daily driver. :/

I got a brand new alternator, it came with the ls that I bought awhile back, so that covers that, I just am pissed it conventiently went out right after I swapped it from my hatch to the crx lol

The car has about a few hundered miles over the 50k mark on the chassi, so its a low mileage car which is also something I like, 15 years old and its not a 6 digit figure yet :/

I guess I'll have to tough it out and fork over some cash :x
I have a few usdm ef hoods here, I will take one thats dented and cut alittle off the front for clearance for the jdm headlights and use that until I get a cf hood.

And if anything else happens I will blame it on the doors lol. I thought they would be good luck since they have no dings or dents, the origional doors someone decided to kick in them and the fenders, so they were trashed

thanks for the support, maybe one day I can bring some good news with progress of the car!

Default Re: Give up on the CRX? (integravic)

integravic, yeah I knew there could be worse, I will have to register to view the thread you pointed me towards to check it out.

maybe its all for the better, I think once I get the windshield replaced, which I'm going to do some price checking and try to be a saleman, I will just cut a stock hood to fit it for now.
Then I think I will order a new hood cable, and most likely the latch assy that goes on the core support. I still have my core support from the jdm front cut, so I think I'm going to take some time at work and maybe take the plasma cutter and put some nice slots into it to make sure I can position the bottom latch perfectly with the hood pin at the top. I think the pin or whatever on the hood is good, just a spring on a bolt basically, so I'm not sweating that.

I'm still looking into cf hoods, the only one I found was one on prostreetonline, I think 620 shipped for the jdm fitment. I'm searching more but not much luck, I havent bought parts off the net in alone time, except a few cars off of here, and all
If anyone could direct me to a place that sells a cf hood for the jdm front that would be great!

Its raining out all day today, I think I may go and try to clean up the rest of the wiring inside the car and try to mount my 'underhood' fusebook somewhere out of the way of the glovebox, and also get my ecu properly mounted for the first time since I've had a b16 :x

Thanks again everyone!

Best advice you can take with an older (5+ yrs) car: buy it stock, and 100% running. Make sure it is 100% road-worthy before doing jack to it. Typically you find n00bs tackling issues that are WAY over their head, get lazy, and half-*** it.

I did this to an extent. It just needed some little things like shocks, basicly parts I planned on replacing with aftermarket. Ran 150 miles back and was still on a full tank. Tore it apart, had some minor issues, then it worked like a charm. Always try to do 1 step at a time if you can.

There was a group buy on here for fiber images CF JDM hood. Mabey you can still get in on it.

Get rid of those doors ASAP, that is the problem. I've never seen such hardship from a car, it has to be the Y curse. Junkyards should not be allowed to sell Y-49 parts, the cars should be crushed sent over Afganastan, that way the metal can never end up on a US car ever again. Whenever I am parts shopping I always, check the color code tag, on cars that were repainted, before I take parts from them. The Y curse is real!

Don't give up on the CRX though, they are IMHO the best Honda platform ever made.
