Default Rattling cat converter

For the last couple of weeks I've had a rattle from under the car. I couldn't find the darn thing though because it wouldn't rattle unless the car was moving and everything I tried to grab and shake around didn't make any noise.

Well on the way home today it got worse, which was actually a blessing. Now I was able to duplicate it while the car was still. It turns out the heat shield attached to the cat is loose. Not the one attached to the car above the cat, but the one that is actually attached to the cat.

It's a carsound cat, so warranty is going to be a pain. It's not screwed on, it's spot welded on so I can't tighten it. I remember watching a car show on TV a few weeks ago and they had an easy fox for this problem, but for the life of me I cvan't remember what they said to do.

Does anyone know a cheap/free way to fix it? I can go to Midas and have them weld it, but I'd rather fix it myself.

Thanks in advance.

Wheres that damn rattle snake picture when you need it?

As for fixing it, get it welded... it'll cost like 5 bux.

Just curious, becaue I've had a problem with my cat forever! It's annoying as hell, but can you get the cat fixed at any shop while it's still on the car. If so (which I'm assuming you can) what would you ask them to do? Because if it's easy I'll get it done tomorrow.

Have a muffler shop clamp the heat shield back down along the sides of the cat and then spot weld the crap out of it. This is how I do mine, usually about 12-13 per side.

It isn't a matter of re-welding, your catalyst is breaking into pieces inside of the cat (most likely). You need to replace the entire thing, and your CEL will be on soon to confirm that is the problem.

I dont think its that. he said he duplicated the problem while the car was stopped.

Make sure they unplug your battery if they weld it on your car. Too much possiblity for damage to electronics.
