so i just got a set of cams (stage 2, skunk 2) and skunk 2 valve springs and retainers, and my question is.. what is your opinion about chipping the computer, nessecity? or could it wait? how would my car run with out doing so? i plan on doing it in feb. but, not now. thanks,, jenn*

Jenn, in my opinion, whenever you do such a serious mod as upgrading your camshafts to much more aggressive ones like the skunk2 stage2's, a tuning session is in order. They cause the air/fuel capabilities of the engine to change in a drastic way.

It would be wise to at least check your air/fuel ratios through out the rpm range so that you aren't running dangerously lean or rich and so that no detonation is occurring. Tuning is for the safety of the engine, but also will extract maximum performance from your new mods. Wait to install if you can't tune.

But then again, if you can resist the temptation to hit vtec, the primary lobes are probably similar enough to the stock lobes that you can maintain a decent air/fuel ratio when your out of vtec. But who can resist? I believe this is sound advice.

Nessecity?, yes definately..... that is a major upgrade and requires Air-Fuel & Timing adjustment for more power and the safety of the engine....

BTW..... Chicks with GSR's and Cams are awesome

yall are all forgetting something when u go skunk 2 cams u need a higher CR or they wont work to there max potential. and u may want to increase the supply of air into the head. so either port and polish the intake manifold or get a better intake manifold. For more info about the skunk 2 cams search on T-I.net

with higher compression you will always have more tunable power, but with just a cam upgrade you can greatly increase your power with tuning. for daily driving you do not want your car to be tuned for maximum power because you will lose reliability

as for the chipping, I would get a socketed ecu and have a custom chip created for it after tuning rather than throwing in a blind chip and expecting good performance

if you're going to do cams and tuning, you may as well bump up your compression while you're at it.

wilmington car girls FTW!

The BEST answer out of all the ones that have been posted so far. Believe me, I would know since I've been chipping ecu's for the past 4 years.
