Default Moved from STS to SM; couple questions on tire/wheel size and weight reduction....

A friend of mine will be making a switch from STS to SM, although unintentionally because the stock D16 in his '94 Civic EX hydrolocked and he just had a B18b laying around, so he'll be swapping that in as a replacement.

What size wheels and tires do the 92-95 Civic running SM guys usually use? He'll most likely get the Kuhmo v710s since they're good for the money and have good reviews. Also, about weight reduction, what's allowed as far as gutting the car? I know STS was pretty stringent on gutting, but how far can he go now that he's in SM?

get ready for an ***-whooping in SM....

you'd probably spend less money to replace the stock D16 and run sts, than you would to make the car competative in SM.

can you trade the b18 for a d16z6?

Check out the rule book on tires and rim widths..

Weight reduction in Street Mod is along the same lines as Street Prepared. Hood is free, front fenders are free, you can substitute front seats, you can take out the rear seats, and the carpet that's attached ot the seat. You can take out the rear seatbelts (if you remove the seats). You have to leave in the rear panels, the headliner, and anything that is ahead of the back of the front seats is off limits.

There's some weight limits though. FWD NA is 1,800 lbs, and FWD with FI is 1,900. There a move afoot by the SCCA to change this weight limit to a displacement based formula with considerations for the drivetrain configuration (FWD/RWD/AWD/Mid engine/forced induction/etc...).

The fast guys in Civics are using anything from 15x6.5" wheels to 15x9" with 205/50-15 to 225/50-15 tires. There's some radical stuff coming though.

Have a look at the rules, and read them carefully before making any mods:

And have a look at the July Fastrack for info about the new weight limit proposals. You'll need to flip through a bunch of pages to get past the financial crap and the Road Racing ****, before you get to the important stuff in Solo .

haha yeah that's what I told him, especially since it's a bone stock b18b

But he had that motor laying around, so why not? He's wanting to do the LS/VTEC conversion later when gets enough $$$, either naturally aspirated or boosted, haven't decided yet. That should close the gap a little, the rest is up to his driving skill.......the fastest SM Civic I know of is the King Motorsport EG hatch (National tour winner) that's using the B18C5 motor.

Good to hear about the weight reduction, I'll give him the green light on ripping the rear seats out and carpeting, as well as the trunk

Locally anything is possible. Heck, try runnig D mod on street tires with sport springs and relatively stock honda motor. You'll be just fine in SM and I'm sure you'll have fun

Yea, nationally you don't stand a chance, but how many people on here seriously set their cars up for national competition?

Get some nice slicks and have fun

Don't touch the trunk. That's not in the rules. If it don't say you can do it, YOU CAN'T.

What he said. With a stock b18 you won't really see an advantage in running anything bigger than a 13" wheel. With that much power and I'm assuming a stock final drive you'll benefit from the small diameter 13's.

You can run any car that's stock in other classes. You could potentially run a stock 1993 Civic DX or a Geo Metro in SM. Just can't move from one stock class to another.

Actually, couldn't you run a slower stock class car in a faster stock class (higher pax)? Say, run your RX-8 in A stock?
