Default Sunroof Doesnt close

Hi, I have a 1990 Honda Civic SI, And my power sunroof does not close. It opens perfectly fine (pulled back into roof) but does not budge when trying to close. I'm pretty sure the motor still works becuz when i crank it with an allen wrench it is much easyer when switch is on "close" like i can feel the motor barley pulling. I have tryed lubricating the rails but nothing is working. ANY Advice would be much appreciated.

make sure all the nuts are tight on the rails and none of them are missing, when it shuts does it lock down in place or can you still push it up from the inside ?

All the nuts on the rails are tight. the only way to close it is to crank it with an allen wrench and when i crank it all the way it does move up into closed position.

did it always do this? or is this something new? it could be as simple as replacing the switch itself.

It's the switch, service manual says that when the motor works in 1 direction and not the other than it is 100% the switch at fault

I will try taking out the switch and cleaning it, but im not sure its the switch. Like i said, when cranking the window closed with an allen wrench, there is much less resistance when the switch it flipped to close.

And also, when i baught the car 2 years ago it worked fine, then more and more frequently the close would not respond till it died...

I had the opposite problem.
The sunroof on my crx si would tilt open and close completely but not slide open. I cleaned the switch and now the sunroof opens but does not close. I think I will just get a new switch...

super common problem, simple and free solution.

take the switch out and separate it by gently prying up the click tabs on the side. take out the contact strips, and scrape the black stuff off the little buttons on the ends with a razor blade or something similar. add a little dielectric grease (autozone/napa/wherever) to them so you don't have to do it again anytime soon and button it back up in reverse order.

not sure what you broke, but the case can be fastened in a different way if you broke the tabs, and the rest is pretty foolproof. i do have an extra switch if you can't salvage yours. shoot me a pm if you need it.

Hey Decoy! Your thread saved me the hassle of trying to figure out what was going on with my sunroof. I have the same exact problem with mine so I will try to clean or replace the switch. It's funny though I thought it may have had 2 motors one for opening and one for closing and just thought that the closing motor just blew or popped a fuse... I guess it wouldn't hurt to clean and lube the tracks...

I also THANK YOU

My sunroof on my 89 crx would tilt up but not open. It would also close completely. It just wouldnt open up. I already took it apart but after reading all this, Im convinced the switch to be the culprit

for you man!!!

Another thing that could cause the sunroof to tilt open and close, but not slide fully open, is what Honda calls the 'sunroof deflector'.

That piece breaks and will not allow the sunroof to slide open, only to tilt open and closed.

The part is discontinued from Honda, and good luck finding an unbroken one 15 years after production was ceased...
