Default What b-series should i run??

I'm pulling out my high compression ls and replacing it with something more daily drivable. I found some motors in my price range but im stuck between what i should do.

So, if you'd like, please pick what you think i should put in and tell me why.

Thanks a lot,
Jake

I'd go for teh b16.

If you were to get the b18b, if i were you i'd run a b16 tranny with it.

B20's are pretty torquey motors, like i said slap on a b16 tranny and you'd be good to go

well, what are you looking for?? high reving driver with some track? freeway crusier, city driver?

the b20 and b18 are good for just an in town driver and freeway cruiser unless you like reving really high in the b16 tranny while on the freeway. (torque is nice to have)

the b16 if your gonna mod it (you can later make it a ls/vtec or even a b20/vtec)

Basically, I'm looking for a reliable daily driver but, I want it to be able to handle itself if i take it to the track. The trans is going to be the ls trans because i already have a ls swap im just changing out the longblock.

You can mod the b18 or b20 also into a lsvtec or b20vtec....it's probably easier to do with it in the car also.

oh yea and I voted for the b18.

LS all the way for a DD. When swapping in something like a B16, there are so many variables to keep vtec from working correctly that it will drive you insane checking the wiring, motor, filters etc. Im still having problems with my swap. An LS will be quick enough and less potential for headache IMO. Plus a B16 with an LS tranny = turdness. I know because I have one. An LS is also cheaper in most cases, you can use the money you save to perform proper maintainence on the engine.

B18A/B (LS) > B16

I would do the B18 and later on get a VTEC head for LS/VTEC and you will have more power than a stock crappy B16.

Why don't you just use your current motor and detune it. Or is it going into another car?

Whatever motor i get im just putting my intake header and exhaust on it that i have already, i dont plan on doing any mods. Deffinitly not doing any head swapping on this. I plan on buying another ef down the road for a track car once i move out of my parents house, i just want my crx to have a reliable motor and since i already have a b-series i wanted to throw another in.

And the motor i have in now(ls, type r pistons, blah blah) is either going to the guy who i bought the car from so he can finish the build or im going to sell it. I'd keep it cuz its a great motor but i just dont think a high compression all motor car is something that should be a daily driver.

Where are you looking at B18b's if they are more than B16?? I have an LS here I got for $100...for DD I'd say LS since you already have one, cheap easy and reliable, B16 will just cause headaches and the LS trans will make it like pooo

Wow you would order an LS motor from there? You know any junkyard around you should have an LS motor for alot less than that....I bought 2 B18bs (one in pieces for a build) a cable tranny, ecu and some other odds and ends for $500 shipped...I'd say buy the B16 swap, swap in the tranny and the head to make a killer high compression LS/Vtec motor with a good tanny and I may even come take the B16 block LS head and tranny from you

30021 - B16A 88-91 (SiR I) Long Block
160Hp 111Trq 10.2 Compression (JDM)
$ 599.00 Plus shipping and handling.

30023 - B18B 94-95 (LS) Long Block
145Hp 127Trq 9.4 Compression (JDM)
$ 749.00 Plus shipping and handling.

Those are the exact two motors i was looking at. I would buy a motor from a junk yard/forums,etc. except right now i live with my parents and we live in a townhouse with no garage and theres no way i'd put that motor in without rebuilding. I figured they give you the gaurentee to start so i guess the extra money is worth it for the fact that i can just put it in and not worry about it.

If thats the case then got with the B16...no LS motor not even the JDM version is worth $750...you could get a full LS swap for that much

a b16 with ls tranny is good it depends on what you want out of the car...If your going to go turbo ls tranny would be great

I have junkyard envy... Care to pm me the name of the yard that shipped you this? The yard by my house has a ton of d16a1's and nothing else...

it sounds like the b18b would be your best bet, it will match up perfectly with your ls tranny. if i were to buy a jdm engine, i would have it rebuilt also for my sake. i dont like putting things that i dont know the condition of in my car. but i understand your concern. you could always check the local classifieds, craigslist, honda-tech for sale area to check to see if someone is selling a stock ls motor nearby, i bet someone is.

theres a thread on this like once a week, guess no one knows how to search?

ok, first off, it depends on what you want out of the car.

a b18a/b (ls) will be funner to drive around the street and residential areas because its got more torque. the b16a (sir) will be a funner highway car because of the much better flowing head and vtec. BUT since you said your sticking with the ls tranny, (which has longer gears than the b16) with either motor its not going to have as much potential then a shorter geared tranny would like a y1/s1 (B16) or the cable gsr/itr transmissions.

if you like wiring and fixing bs, then id go with the b16. just because so many things can go wrong and not enable vtec to engauge. that and if you like revving the expletive out of the motor, id go with the b16.

but whichever direction you go, both setups will get the car moving. so good luck with w/e you choose.

IMO DOHC vtec engines + a LS tranny = waist of time, its like buying a corvette and only taking it up to 4000 RPM, its just NOT what the engine was supposed to do.

If u get a b16/b18c get a matching tranny, otherwise id go b20 or b18 + a small turbo or S/C.

Also, a b18b wont be any faster than your engine already.
