Default Can valve clearances make that much of a difference?

I just installed a cam in my d16. I didnt do the valve clearances yet (doing them tomorrow), but I did start the car to make sure she would fire up. The car is running like **** and almost sounds like the timing is off, but the cam and crank are both in sync at TDC. So my question is, do those clearances really make the car run so shitty?

Yes, if they're too tight/loose you'll get a condition similar to a misfire. If they're too tight for an extended period it'll eventually burn the valves.

Well they will be fixed tomorrow. thanks for the response. I went out and both cam/crank are both TDC so it didnt skip. Lets hope its just the clearances.
