Default ? about paint

I'm painting my JDM front end, PY, the shop wants to know what kind of paint, enamel or polyuerathane, just base (1 step), or base/ clear (2 step). It seems I have read conflicting opinions on here before, any ideas which way is best, which is OEM? Basically, what should I do?

I can tell you that it's single stage paint. You probably already know the paint ocde is Y-56.

Got the code, thanks for the info on the single stage.
I'm ready to spray this thing and get it on the car.

i would paint the whole car not just the front end... even if your current paint is a few months old the only way to guarentee that the front end is color matched to the rest of the car is to do it that way. no short cuts

if its 2 stage, which results in a mucho better finsih then it can be blended into the rest of the car so it matches pretty well, use a dupont based product such as imron 3000 prep, base clear, wetsand and buff the whole car,i know y56 is single stage, but it can be mixed to 2 stage. , but do w/e, your car

Well, I am a painter so hopefully you listen carefully to me

The single stage paint will work but most places use a base/clear system that will give you the best finish. I spray the PPG Global line at my shop and I can tell you PY (Y56) in a basecoat clearcoat matches pretty much dead on!

Single stage is cheaper and you don't have to clear it, that is why it is used, and primarily on solid colors only.

I recommend you use a base/clear system and have the shop blend your doors. Any decent shop should blend anyway, but there is no need to paint your whole car. Hope this helps, and good luck!

thanks for the advice, I think I'm going to do single stage. I'm really not too concerned with the paint match, as I plan on painting the whole car some sort of gunmetal color in a year or so(sorry PY guys). I would drive around with primer for the next year if it was socially acceptable for a R owner to do so.

No worries. I like how DC2s look in gunmetal; the JDM Vogue Silver Metallic ITRs are also really sharp.

One less PY makes mine just that more rare, too. :keek:

Screw it and roll it. Who cares what people think? I'd save money as much as I can. You can put the money you would have spent on the front end to the paint job and get it a little early.
