Default Tranny problems in the MDX Help Diagnose

I have a 01' MDX. I bought it with 97k miles on it. So far it has been pretty good to us only except the transmission is acting funny since we bought it.
When accelerating hard it's fine, when excellerating easy it feels like it doesn't know when to shift and shifts too early.
THEN, when we slow down to stop it will, MOST OF THE TIME, dowshift to soon and send the RPM's up and slow down the truck like you slammed on the brakes.

I think it has low line pressure or something but need to know where to look or what sensor to replace to get some better results. I pulled the codes and it only says that it need to be serviced. I REALLY don't want to pay the dealer to diagnose if it is a common issue and I can replace a sensor or something,

Now on another note, I know there is a recall on those trannies and a upgrade that is done to prevent overheating of the gears and chipping of the gears. That recall was performed back in 04' so the gears are fine and runs out smooth as far as the gears go.
I thinkit is just a sensor gone bad but I need a starting point.
Thanks in advance.

jwrape,

I don't own a MDX but planning to hopefully pick one up soon. Been reading alot about them. I'm planning to pick up a 2002-2003 model.

According to the MDX forums, maybe check the EGR valve. Try to also get your tranny flushed. Hopefully it's something simple and not the tranny going out. Let me know how it goes since I'm in the market for a used MDX.

good luck!

Did you read that somewhere? I tried to go to your link but couldn't get there through my firewall.

I iwll check out the EGR and see if that's it.

jwrape,

Yes, I read it on the http://www.acuramdx.org forum. Check out their forum if you never been to the website before. ALOT of info.

Maybe that a look at this posting here, seems like it's possible that this is normal on a mdx (?):

By far, I'm have no expert on what it could be but this is some of the stuff I read while doing my research. Hope the mdx website helps!

Off topic, Does the MDX have enough cargo room for you? Do you use it to make runs to your local home improvement center? Trying to find something nice enough to haul family around and those weekend trips to home depot. Good luck!

HTH,

If I understand your problem correctly, My brother had that problem a couple of months ago on his pontiac. The valve release, for the fuel was not working properly so that had to be replaced, and he also had problems with a faulty comp chip. It cost him abotu 600 bucks to fix it. I hope this helps.

Yea plenty of room. Don't use it for lumber or anything. Just a grocery getter for the wife.
Changed the tranny fluid yesterday and had a little metal on the magnetic oil plug. put new fluid in and it seemed to shift a little better. but scared of all the metal on that magnet.

I have to take it to the dealer anyways because the Maint Req'd light came on but I hate to have the dealer do anything to it because they over charge but I only trust the dealer and I still don't trust them that much. I usually do all my own work but I usually only work on domestics. Honda's are a little different.

Pretty common problem on the 3.5L AT Honda motors... we've replaced 2 odyssey and 3 CRV trannies in the past month at my dealership.

Definantly take it in and see if the coverage is extended or they might do a goodwill type of deal .

good luck man

I can only hope it's covered under extended warranty or it's a small issue. I would hate to have to pay for it.

Only 2 odyssey trans in a month?? Seems like thats all I do. I love Honda but damn it those trannies are junk.

I believe that in 03 Honda redesigned the MDX trans and it's a much beefier unit.

they should have extended the warranty on your MDX trans to 100k...go into the dealership, make friends with an advisor or tech, and see what they can do. They'll be more willing to help out if you've had maint work doen there

That's just it, I haven't had any maintenance done on it at all yet. I just bought the truck about 4 months ago at 97k and havee JUST changed the tranny fluid.

Hopefully, the manager will have mercy on me since I have only 104k on her
